A RYAN MOORE DOUBLE HELPS TAKE THE GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND TEAM TO VICTORY IN THE SHERGAR CUP

Watching Saffie Osborne chase down a fleeing Ryan Moore while spraying and soaking him with champagne amounted to witnessing one of those rare moments when the usually ultra-calm and unflappable Moore was, for once, caught well-and-truly out of his comfort zone.

That moment came after the Great Britain and Ireland team, which was made up of Moore, Osborne and Dylan Browne McMonagle, had won the 2026 edition of the Shergar Cup at Ascot with a haul of 81 points, 19 points clear of the Hong Kong team which finished in second place.

Moore’s individual total of 47 points took him to another Silver Saddle Trophy win, following on his same success back in 2006, the last time Moore appeared in the Shergar Cup lineup.

Over the six races of the competition, Moore landed a double aboard Asgard’s Captain and Archers Bay and Osborne won on Red Spells Danger. Jerry Chau and Luke Ferraris brought back winners for Hong Kong in the form of Tuco Salamanca and Dancing In Paris, while Frida Valle-Skar won the final Shergar Cup race for Team Europe aboard Crown Board.

All of the race winning jockeys were justifiably pleased with their success, but Osborne did reveal to Racing Post that she had set another goal for the day.

“I just attempted to make Ryan laugh, and did so successfully,” said Osborne.

For Jamie Melham, it was a worthwhile experience, as any international engagement is, but this one came with not even a sniff of a result as a well beaten fifth placing was the best result Melham could muster on the day.
