TEETAN ON TRACK FOR HIS BEST HONG KONG SEASON YET

By Darren Winningham | Tuesday, April 23, 2024

Karis Teetan has amassed a wonderful winning record in the 2023/24 in Hong Kong – currently having 64 winners, sitting second in the Jockey’s Premiership behind the all-conquering Zac Purton, with his mounts winning HK$108 million in stakes.

Teetan has been quietly chipping away at his personal best season total of 94 winners in Hong Kong in the 2019/20 season.

I caught up with the Mauritian jockey who has called Hong Kong home for the past 11 years at track work at Sha Tin.

“I have been getting some great opportunities and making the most of it, the season has gone very well. I cannot complain – I just want to keep on improving,” said Teetan.

With around 26 meetings of the current season to go Teetan hopes that he can finish the season on a strong note.

WINNO posed that it is possible to break his 94 winners for the season and possibly post the elusive 100 wins in a season for a jockey.

Teetan replied with “I just want to be consistent throughout the whole season. If I just can keep the momentum going ... it is all about the momentum and keeping the support going and the winners ticking, then I think we could well get to a good number towards the end of the year”.

Teetan has an impressive record since moving to Hong Kong.

He has won many of the feature races in Hong Kong including the QEII Cup (Romantic Warrior 2022), the Hong Kong Sprint (2018 Mr Stunning), the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (2020 Mr Stunning), The Champions & Chater Cup (2021 Panfield), The Hong Kong Derby (2022 Romantic Warrior), and the Hong Kong Classic Mile (2022 Romantic Warrior).

He also won the LONGINES International Jockeys Challenge in 2019 and he recently posted his 600th winner in Hong Kong – this is no mean feat considering the competitive level of riders that he opposes each week on the track.

All of this makes Teetan very much an integral part of the Hong Kong racing landscape and a fine ambassador for the sport in Hong Kong.
