MY SPY LAPS UP THE LONGER TRIP

By Graham Potter | Friday, December 29, 2023

My Spy, third-up since transferring to the Tony and Maddysen Sears training yard from Annabel Neasham, put his first win on the board when racing beyond 1200m for the first time, taking out a QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate over 1350m at Ipswich on December 29.

The son of Better than Ready only produced two ordinary results in his first two starts in his new surroundings, but an improved level of fitness and a new, preferred distance was ready to help make all of the difference and that possibility was recognised in the pre-race betting where My Spy started favourite at $3.40.

My Spy landed in the leading line, but Ryan Maloney elected to take My Spy back to a position just worse than midfield in the early part, sitting in seventh place some four lengths off the leader.

With the speed on mid-race, My Spy dropped a further two lengths back and there was still plenty of work to do when Maloney angled his mount out on the approach to the home turn to swing all of five wide but, importantly, with a clear run to the line.

On straightening, My Spy still had five lengths to find on the leader. Coming through the 200m, that deficit was down to just over four lengths. At the 100m mark it was down to three lengths, but My Spy still had four horses in front of him ... and a couple of them were kicking on strongly.

Savouring the extra ground though, My Spy was about to do his best work inside the last 75m.

There was a line of four across the track with 50m left to run, with My Spy, down the centre of the track, the widest runner of that group, and he simply finished with too much vigour for his rivals to get to the front when it mattered most and claim a useful, first career victory by 0.30 lengths.
