GOLD COAST - THE QUICK WRAP - FEBRUARY 10, 2024

By Graham Potter | Saturday, February 10, 2024

February 10 - back on the Gold Coast Poly Track with a six race card, which would see four of the races go the way of local trainers.

Toby Edmonds, now training solo again with the departure of his son Trent who has moved interstate to begin a training career in his own right, kicked off the local winning theme when Jamaican Rumba destroyed his opposition in a Class 5 Handicap over 1100m.

Staring on the second line of betting at $2.60, the four-year-old son of Shalaa took no prisoners when trouncing the runner-up, the $1.75 favourite Data Patch by no less than 6.50 lengths.

Jamaican Rumba, who was ridden by Jasper Franklin, is now a five-time winner from only fourteen starts with his prize-money earnings now closing in on $100 000.

Trainer Jack Bruce and jockey Corey Bayliss combined to take out a win with Hereditary in the second race on the card, a Maiden Handicap over 1900m.

Again, the result was never in question with the four-year-old son of Zacinto scoring by 2.50 lengths and getting one back for the followers of favourites as he started at the top of the betting boards at a price of $2.90.

Hereditary had six starts without success for the Mick Price and Michael Kent (Jnr) training partnership before transferring to Jack Bruce, where he took a further four starts to find his winning touch, coming back to provincial level after his first three starts for Bruce were at Metropolitan level.

Race three ... and Godra, easy to back at $8.50, was a popular winner for local trainer Nicole Luke in a BM58 Handicap over 2000m.

The five-year-old mare had a mix of form ... from showing glimpses of promise to putting in some ordinary results ... but she was well enough on song here to claim her second career victory by 0.50 lengths in a pressurised finish which saw less than a length cover the first four horses across the line. Girish Goomany did the honours in the saddle.

The $50 000 prize-money for this race made it the most valuable race on the day and, while it might have been thirteen months between wins, the mare clearly chose a very good race in which to come good.

Local trainer Scott Morrisey has been making headlines in Brisbane recently with his charge Tikka Ready now winning four-in-a-row, but there is always home-town business to take care of and Morrisey did just that by sending the Capitalist colt Lumens Lenny out to score a win on debut in a Maiden Plate over 1200m.

It is always very satisfying when a horse wins first time out, particularly when it does so in the manner it did here, spreadeagling the field in a clinical galloping display in which Lumens Lenny put 6.80 lengths between himself and his nearest rival at the line giving Nozi Tomizawa an armchair ride.

Patience has obviously been the key here with Lumens Lenny not having raced as a two-year-old and he was now only having his first run halfway through his three-year-old season.

He ticked a lot of boxes here and the betting boards predicted the demolition job. Lumens Lenny started at $1.80 with only one other runner quoted in single figures.

Trainer Adam Campton became the fourth local trainer to win on the day when Living Free took out the fifth race ... a Class 1 Handicap over 1200m.

Prior to that Campton must have been wondering if it was going to be one of ‘those days’ after his two previous runners on the day had both finished second, including the short-priced favourite Data Patch in the first race.

This time it was an easy watch for Campton though as the former Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained runner ran out a comfortable winner by a decisive three length margin in his first run since transferring to the Campton yard.

This win gave apprentice Jasper Frankin a double on the day after he won the first race on Jamaican Rumba.

Trainer Wayne Nugent made the trip from Toowoomba to the Gold Coast and he was rewarded when Bie’res made it back-to-back wins when taking out the last race on the card ... winning a 0-58 Handicap over 1540m by 2.50 lengths at a starting price of $8.

The four-year-old mare had saluted in her previous start over a similar distance (1500m) at Kilcoy and she took the next step in her stride here, under confident handing by jockey Nori Masuda.
