CAN KARIS TEETAN WIN HIS SECOND LONGINES INTERNATIONAL JOCKEYS CHAMPIONSHIP?

By Darren Winningham | Tuesday, December 5, 2023

Karis Teetan will be looking to win his second LONGINES International Jockeys Championship (IJC) this year ... a result which would put an exclamation mark on his successful comeback from a serious health issue.

Teetan won his first IJC in 2019 in a dominant display.

A lot of water passed under the bridge since then for the Mauritian jockey.

He married Xaviere Cottereau. He has a wonderful daughter Isabelle born in April 2022.

Not long after that Teetan was sidelined from racing for three months with a debilitating thyroid condition that is now managed.

Ironically, he returned to the saddle on this night twelve months ago.

Settled in family life nicely now Teetan said, “we are just loving Hong Kong and we are just looking to the future now”.

Teetan reflected on last season telling Winno: “It was a struggle last season. It was the toughest season for me. In November I thought I would never be allowed to ride a horse again because of the thyroid issue. It was a struggle back then, but I am over that now.

“We (Teetan and his family) are just loving Hong Kong and we are just looking to the future”.

In the 2023/24 season Teetan has been riding in consistent form ... riding 22 winners to date to sit in second place behind Zac Purton in the season’s Hong Kong jockey’s championship.

“I have put my head down this season, I just have to keep working hard and ride as many winners as I can ride,” said Teetan.

“I am just thankful for the support I have been getting, sitting second behind Zac Purton so early in the season is a great achievement for me.”

He goes into the IJC with a solid book of rides saying: “I am just grateful to be riding in the competition. It is going to be an awesome night.

“If I win this time, we will have a big party”.
