WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 22, 2023

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 20, 2023

DOOMBEN this week – The usual nine races with the track currently rated as ‘soft’ and the rail is out 3 metres for the entire circuit. I expect the warm weather in the lead up to the races should ensure we get into the ‘Good’ range.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Two-year-olds start the day off.

Rich Minx (6), a debutant from the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted stable, won a recent barrier trial and there has been solid support for the runner since the markets opened – Boris Thornton will ride.

I like the Tony Gollan Racing runner Mighty (2) who has had some previous starts and she resumes here from a six week freshen up. A recent barrier trial win – blinkers going on and Jimmy Orman aboard – there is a lot to like about this runner – could be super value at $6.

Star Act (4) is from the Bjorn Baker stables in NSW. Has had some equivocal form – really cannot see her bothering the opposition here, but she may race well on a firm track – Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride.

Crimson Warning (1) is trained by Nick Beck who recently had his first winner since going alone as a trainer. The filly resumes from an 18-week spell – has recently won a barrier trial and Mark Du Plessis will ride.

Selections:

2 – Mighty
6 – Rich Minx
1 – Crimson Warning
4 – Star Act
Rough chance – (5) Five Star Vixen

Race 2

Class 3 over 2020 metres.

Piraeus (9) is from the Richard and Will Freedman yards. They have an extraordinary strike rate when they send runners north to QLD. Last start over a mile at Gosford would suggest that the distance is right up his alley. The tongue tie is coming off for this runner. Boris Thornton will ride him here. Massive odds of $12.

Chase N Artie (8) is on the quick back up from a nice effort last week. Trained by Les Kelly and Sean Cormack retains the ride. He worked home well over 1805 metres last weekend – looks like the distance will be no problem.

Master Marko (3) is trained by Paul Jenkins and Ryan Maloney is aboard. Is tried at this distance – previous solid form over 2000 metres. Raced at a midweek meeting at Eagle Farm last start – think he may be better suited at Doomben racing close to the speed.

Tony Be (5) is a Chris Waller runner making his debut in QLD. Jimmy Orman will ride. Has been racing at this distance at Randwick and Rosehill at recent starts – on those efforts he must be in the race here.

Viadelamore (11) is the stable mate – maybe a rough chance at huge odds.

Selections:

9 – Piraeus
8 – Chase N Artie
3 – Master Marko
5 – Tony Be
Rough chance – (11) Viadelamore

Race 3

Another distance race over 2020 metres – these are so difficult to assess.

Atlantic Eagle (3) won with authority a fortnight ago at this track and distance with Luke Tarrant piloting and giving him a wonderful run. He goes up in grade, but down in weight and looks ideally placed.

Stuck With You (4) from the Matthew Dunn Racing team has a solid record at Doomben. Has been carrying massive weights in recent starts – goes down in the weights and onto a track where he thrives – with Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) to ride he could get the job done in a race that looks like it will be run to suit his style of racing.

Otyrar (3) resumes after a five week freshen up after running in the Ipswich Cup. The track did not suit him there so forget that run. He is another track specialist with five starst for three wins and a placing here – he seems to bring his “A Game” when he races here. Ryan Maloney is aboard.

Not many other real live chances – but Mississippi Prince (1) and Circling (10) could fill the exotic placings.

Selections:

7 – Atlantic Eagle
4 – Stuck With You
3 – Otyrar
1 – Mississippi Prince
Rough chance – (10) Circling

Race 4

No Metro Wins race here over 1110 metres.

Reliable Ruby (3) is hopefully a jewel in the crown for the Chris Munce Racing yards. She won here at a midweek race when resuming back on 14 June. Since then, she had no luck at the Sunshine Coast over 1000 metres where she got too far back and rattled home late. The extra distance should suit her here with Damien Thornton aboard. I think she is a great each way chance at $7.

Gollan Racing has Inasec (6) in the race with Angela Jones riding – her claim will be of importance. Last time out here a fortnight ago she rattled home late to go down narrowly to a very promising runner in the form of Skidamarink who has a record of three wins from four starts. That run would suggest that she is ready to fire here.

Field Wiri (10) comes off a win at Newcastle last time out – another runner from the Will & Richard Freedman yards. She had a stint in QLD last year in July and August and was a costly conveyance for punters with some disappointing efforts. Rather see her win again before climbing onto her back and tipping her again.

Power Boom (12) is second up with the pacifiers going on. She is trained by Glen Thornton. Resumed in a midweek meeting recently and didn’t go that well. Maybe with the gear changes and up in distance she can run a place with Samantha Collett riding.

Selections:

3 – Reliable Ruby
6 – Inasec
10 – Field Wiri
12 – Power Boom
Rough chance – (2) Avolonte

Race 5

Class 6 over 1615 metres.

Seleque (3) is a Chris Waller runner. Resumed from a month freshen up here two weeks ago and was run down late in an exciting finish where there were several runners lining up across the track. Probably to be fair was unlucky on that occasion. She looks well placed and ready to get back into the winner’s circle – Ryan Maloney will ride.

Tony Gollan has Ashgrove (2) racing second up after a great effort first up over 1350 metres where he had no luck late in the race won by Blaze A Trail who won again last weekend. The step up to a mile will suit – Jimmy Orman will ride – I just have some concerns with his second up stats which are equivocal.

The stable mate is Love Sensation (7) with Angela Jones riding. Is third up here and has won third up previously.

Be Water My Friend (1) has been ridden forward his last two starts – I think that he is better ridden quiet – maybe he will need to be ridden in this fashion to get the mile – Mark Du Plessis will ride him again.

Selections:

3 – Seleque
2 – Ashgrove
7 – Love Sensation
1 – Be Water My Friend

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie – open field here over 1050 metres for the three-year-old runners.

Kelly Schweida has Vodka Martini (7) on the quick back up from last weekend where he was defeated by a smart one (Freedom Rally). They have gone with Cejay Graham again with her 2-kilogram making the gelding look a serious contender here. Barrier 3 – should just jump and run and probably take a sit behind Matilly (3) who normally jumps and runs.

Matilly (3) is a last start winner leading at the Sunshine Coast with Justin Stanley riding for Paul Wallace. The filly is undefeated in four career starts – this looks like her toughest assignment to date. Her sectionals last time out were very impressive – I think she may struggle against some of these more seasoned runners.

Simbu (10) is a progressive Tony Gollan runner. Has resumed and won his two starts from a spell. He is looking for a hat trick of wins here on his first Saturday meeting. Angela Jones will ride. He was heavily backed last time out at the Sunshine Coast meeting on a Sunday where he won with plenty in reserve.

Redzoust (4) debuts in QLD after a stable change from the McEvoy yard to Rex Lipp. He has won a trial on his home track at Toowoomba recently – maybe at $21 could cause an upset – Boris Thornton will ride. The tongue tie goes on as well.

Selections:

7 – Vodka Martini
10 – Simbu
3 – Matilly
4 – Redzoust
Rough chance – (9) Queen Assassin

Race 7

The first leg of the treble – a No Metro Win over 1110 metres.

Ready For Anything (12) is a Matthew Dunn Racing runner with Kyle Wilson Taylor riding. Resumed in a midweek meeting at Eagle Farm and overcame some difficulties in running to post a solid win. Around the $5 mark he looks well placed to stand up in Saturday grade. He has a great second up record and should be hard to beat.

Andy (6), who comes off some solid efforts over the Grafton Carnival, Is trained by Andrew Parramore with Anthony Allen to ride. Allen went to Macau last weekend and rode two winners – well done Anthony! A quick break at Hong Kong Disneyland – I hope he got me some Mickey Mouse ears and he is back riding in Brisbane. This runner has a solid record over these distances and $21 is rude odds for me. He could get a win here.

Orbisyn (1) is trained by David Vandyke and must carry 59.5 kilograms – this may be a problem late in the running. Paul Hamblin has been booked to ride. A last start winner at Ipswich on a Friday meeting - he may show up again.

Groomed (8) resumes here for Robert Heathcote. Larry Cassidy will ride. Has drawn poorly in barrier 14 but has had two trials to get him ready to resume racing.

Selections:

12 – Ready For Anything
6 – Andy
1 – Orbisyn
8 – Groomed

Race 8

A race over the 1200 metres – Open class.

Wisdom Of Water (8) has had a stable change from Annabel Neasham to the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted yards. He resumes after a 26-week spell and won a recent barrier trial at Doomben. The tongue tie and the winkers come off for this first up assignment for the new stable. There has been some heavy support for him since the markets have opened – now trading at around $3.70. He has not posted a win in 78 weeks and I would rather see him win prior to climbing aboard – the new stable may see a new change of luck for this five-year-old.

Contemptuous (4) is the stable mate. Was second up in the Group 3 Healy Stakes – drew wide – got caught wide and then folded late. That was second up – he is better than that run – third up record is solid – Martin Harley will ride.

Tony Gollan has Salateen (7) in the race. She has been racing well at Group and Listed levels in her past four starts. She has been racing at Eagle Farm, where I think she struggles to run well. Back to Doomben for this run where she has had 6 starts for 3 wins and 2 placings. Ryan Maloney will ride. Look for him to race midfield and finish the race off well.

Snowzone (6) is from the Kris Lees Racing yards. Is second up here after a solid run first up when he flew home late over 1110 metres on this track. Will strip better for that run and the extra distance will assist his chances. Andrew Mallyon will ride.

Roman Aureus (2) won the recent Rockhampton Newmarket. Brian Wakefield knows that this gelding loves this track. A master stroke in booking Cejay Graham to ride and she will claim 2 kilograms. Cannot be left out if the track remains in the slow range.

Selections:

7 – Salateen
8 – Wisdom Of Water
6 – Snowzone
4 – Contemptuous
Rough chances – (2) Roman Aureus

Race 9

Well, it is the last race! A massive field over 1350 metres. Keep your wallet in your pocket – most of the favoured runners have drawn extremely wide.

Release The Beans (9) is trained by Robert Heathcote. Got too far back second up a fortnight ago here. He got knocked over at the start – probably did not help in in the result. Given some luck he should be able to get a cosy run-in transit and be strong on the line – Boris Thornton – who has a nice book of rides will ride him.

Enterprise Mia (14) is a Stephen O’Dea and Matt Hoysted representative. She has drawn awful in barrier 20 and will need some luck from out there. I expect that apprentice Cejay Graham will have her placed in the midfield. Maybe with any luck in the running she can frank her second up record which is good.

Canadian Dancer (7) is the stable mate. Ryan Maloney will ride. She raced over 1200 metres last time out and raced as if she wanted further – she gets the extra distance here, but will need some serious luck from barrier 21.

Princess Tenko (8) is trained by Clinton Taylor. She was gallant in defeat in the recent Rockhampton Newmarket won by Roman Aureus (Race 8 – number 2). She has drawn barrier 19 – she may be in trouble from out there as she likes to race in a forward prominent position. She may be able to get across as there is not much speed drawn inside of her. Jimmy Orman has the ride – he maybe can work some magic from the wide gate.

A tough assignment for the last race – keep your eyes on the markets for any late moves.

Selections:

9 – Release The Beans
14 – Enterprise Mia
8 – Princess Tenko
7 – Canadian Dancer
Rough chances – (4) Love Sensation
