WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, APRIL 1, 2023

By Darren Winningham | Saturday, April 1, 2023

Doomben – nine races – a track rated ‘Soft’ with the rail out 3.5 metres for the entire circuit.

It is April Fool’s day. I heard the best April Fool’s joke – or was it real. FLEMO said that “Broncos and QLD will win this year.” I am no APRIL fool – so I just laughed it off!

There is a massive program in Sydney - the national focus is on that meeting this weekend. I see that the old sparring partners from Hong Kong – Zac Purton and Joao Moreira will resume their battles on the Randwick track. Should be some interesting racing!

The QLD riding ranks are represented by Ben Thompson and Taylor Marshall ... both having rides in the Group 1 Doncaster ... and Luke Dittman who rides in the Australian Derby.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Tough race to open the program.

Let’s go straight down the page as they are listed.

Selections:

1 – Zelgaria
2 – Russian Alliance
3 – Tricketeer
4 – Oceans Of Energy

Race 2

Small field over 2200 metres.

Chris Munce Racing has Southern Stock (5) engaged. He won at Eagle Farm and then they backed him up the week after – just think he raced flat. With two weeks between runs now look for him to be ready to show his best. Mark Du Plessis goes aboard. The gelding drops in the weights to 53.5 kilograms.

The Chris Waller runner Mubariz (3) backs up after a nice effort last Saturday – Jimmy Orman will ride.

If the rains come – keep Fast Talking (1) in your mind – he loves wet tracks.

Selections:

5 – Southern Stock
3 – Mubariz
1 – Fast Talking
4 – Warp Speed

Race 3

Another small field.

Robert Heathcote Racing has two solid chances with Stuttering (3) and Dune Forty Five (7). I like Stuttering (3) with Mark Du Plessis to ride.

The stable mate Dune Forty Five (7) resumed at huge odds ($26) and won first up. Gets the chance for two consecutive wins with Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) to ride.

Sagacious (4) has been racing well. Won two starts ago here at this distance and then they stepped him up to 1830 metres across the road at Eagle Farm where he didn’t seem to run out the distance – will be better suited back to the mile.

Lord Markel (8) is on the quick back up after having no luck in the race last weekend – down in the weights. Trained by Adam Campton – could show up and nice odds.

Selections:

3 – Stuttering
4 – Sagacious
8 – Lord Markel
7 – Dune Forty Five

Race 4

Class 3 over 1050 metres.

Tony Gollan Racing runners hold the key to this race. Inasec (11) will be ridden by Angela Jones - he has had a three-week freshen up since his last start. He has drawn wide in barrier 17 and that may be a problem, however there is a fair bit of speed in the race and he looks well placed.

The stablemate is Putontheredlight (14) and will be ridden by Angela’s boyfriend Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT). I am certain that there will be an awkward silence on the way home in their car depending on who wins this race. This mare finds it difficult to win a race, however this weekend she has drawn well and gets every opportunity to finally get back in the winners stall.

Bill Healey trains Orphan’s Trust (16). She trialled very well recently and could be a blowout chance - Anthony Allen will ride this mare - who may just jump and run and be hard to run down late.

Dale Smith rides Goblin De Quo (13) for trainer Darryl Ward - she has had a five week freshen up and could sprint well.

Selections:

11 – Inasec
14 – Putontheredlight
13 – Goblin’ De Quo
16 – Orphan’s Trust

Race 5

Adam Campton saddles up Charge On (4) with Jimmy Orman to ride. He did win here two starts ago and has raced well since. He is not a prolific winner of races, but he just seems to be placed well in this grade.

Field Regiment (5) is trained by Stephen Lee - he posted a solid win last time out at the Gold Coast on the synthetic track. This weekend Andrew Mallyon will ride. He could just improve on this track and trouble the early market favourite.

I am not too keen on the rest of the field so take your pick for the final placings.

Selections:

4 – Charge On
5 – Field Regiment
9 – Patton
10 – Count The Coin

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie – open field over 1350 metres

Gollan Racing has some solid chances here. They may throw a party if Da Party Gal (4) can get the job done here with Jimmy Orman aboard. She is third up. There is some solid speed in the race which probably sets the race up nicely for her.

The stable-mate is Argyle Pink (11) who is also third up – Angela Jones in the saddle – has drawn terribly in barrier 14. I think that she is better ridden quiet – she led them up last start. She does like this Doomben track.

Reeanon (10) is trained by Barry Baldwin and another nice ride for Mark Du Plessis. She resumed here three weeks ago and ran well. Stepping up to a distance that will suit her will see her run a bold race at some tasty odds of $10.

Boho Beauty (7) is trained by Edmonds Racing – Jim Byrne rides the lightly raced mare – she could race well here.

Selections:

4 – Da Party Gal
10 – Reeanon
7 – Boho Beauty
11 – Argyle Pink
Rough chance – (12) Sabalenka

Race 7

Like a rough chance here from the Robert Heathcote Racing team – Ekaterina (3). She drew barrier 16 first up and had to go back and be ridden for luck from back in the field. She never really got into the race. However, she did work home late. I keep looking at her second up record with two starts for two wins. Damien Thornton rides and it gives him a solid chance to post another win since relocating to Queensland – some ridiculous odds on offer at $9.

The stable-mate is En Pointe (6) who is third up here with Angela Jones riding. Drawn a little wide in barrier 9 – but she does ping the gates and roll forward.

Burnish Gold (2) is trained by Rex Lipp & Nick Beck. She won here three two starts ago with Jim Byrne in the saddle – he is back aboard this weekend. She raced very well last time out and commands respect.

Spirit Queen (11) from the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted yards has been well supported since the markets opened. Nikita Beriman will ride the filly again. She stormed home last time out at this track and distance. She got too far back last time out – the blinkers come off here for this run – look for a bold performance.

Selections:

3 – Ekaterina
11 – Spirit Queen
2 – Burnish Gold
6 – En Pointe

Race 8

Like a roughie here in Amity Gal (12) first up from the David Vandyke yards. Jim Byrne will ride – she has had two recent trials – both have been solid. She is undefeated first up in two preparations – I think they have found a race where she can perform well.

Manhood (6) was heavily supported when he won first up for Annabel Neasham. Jag Guthmann-Chester will ride him again. He has been well supported again in the markets – expect a bold showing.

Tilianam (8) races well at this circuit. Forget the last start effort at Eagle Farm and go on the start prior where she won here. Jimmy Orman goes aboard this weekend – will be hard to hold out.

The stable-mate from the Gollan Racing team is Situation Room (10) who has led and won in his past two runs here. Looks well placed again – Angela Jones is riding in sensational form and remains aboard.

A few rough chances – could show up – this is a very open race.

Selections:

12 – Amity Gal
6 –Manhood
8 – Tilianam
10 – Situation Room
Rough chances – (9) Zuma California & (2) Viral

Race 9

Well, it is the last race! A massive field over 1615 metres.

Tenzing (9) is a Gollan Racing runner having his third start for the new stable. I think this is the right distance and race for him. Jimmy Orman rides again – looks a solid bet in the last race.

Finsceal (17) is my roughie – trained by Munce Racing and Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride. He raced midweek last time out at Eagle Farm over 1835 metres. He did not like the extra distance and dropping back to the mile here I expect we will see a dramatic improvement - $14 is not a bad price.

Veandechance (12) will be ridden by Jim Byrne – trained by Matthew Dunn Racing. Is third up here and she looks like she has been racing looking for the mile. Has been well supported in the markets as well.

Merseyside (6) is trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted – Nikita Beriman will ride. Not too sure how to rate this mare – she has been racing in midweek races and steps up to Saturday grade – may pop up at large odds.

Hold the phone – well it is Telephone Booth (8) trained by Mark Currie with Angela Jones riding. She has very little luck last time out here over 1350 metres – stepping up in distance – the mile looks ideal.

Selections:

9 – Tenzing
17 – Finsceal
12 – Veandechance
6 – Merseyside
Rough chances – (8) Telephone Booth
