WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, MARCH 18, 2023

By Darren Winningham | Wednesday, March 15, 2023

Doomben this week – nine races this week with the track rated ‘soft’ and with the rail is out 1.5 metres for the entire circuit.

The massive JEWEL program will be held here this weekend with the Gold Coast track being redeveloped.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Tough race to open the program.

Selections:

6 – Hold On Honey
11 – Situation Room
3 – Zuma California
12 – Headwall
Rough chance – (15) Nashira & (9) Ned’s Gully

Race 2

Small field over 2000 metres.

Chris Munce Racing has Southern Stock (8) backing up after a superb win last weekend. Mark Du Plessis goes aboard – the gelding drops in the weights to 52 kilograms.

Navajo Peak (7) is a NSW invader trained by David Payne – has Ben Thompson aboard. Has been racing well in Sydney Saturday grade and has won over 2000 metres. His best form has been on wet tracks – that is my only concern.

Keep Barade (4) safe from the Jack Bruce stable who has the blinkers going back on here and is getting up to a distance he loves.

Selections:

7 – Navajo Peak
8 – Southern Stock
4 – Barade
3 – Fast Talking

Race 3

Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Secret Tales (10). She was sent back to midweek company last start to get some confidence and she posted a win over 1350 metres. She steps up to a mile here – has a solid record third up as well – Taylor Marshall to ride.

Applications (8) is first up here with a few solid trials under his belt for trainer Glenn Thornton. Looks like another Thornton jockey has hit QLD with Damien Thornton riding. Could cause an upset.

Bottega (1) has the top weight from Lee Freedman stables. Solid run first up with a slashing second – up in weights here – Angela Jones will ride. Not keen on this one, but could be proven wrong on race day.

Selections:

10 – Secret Tales
8 – Applications
1 – Bottega
3 – Red Wave
Rough chance – (5) Magic Conqueror

Race 4

Class 3 over 1200 metres.

The Richard and Will Freedman trained Eye Pea Oh (11) was heavily backed into favourite when she made her debut in QLD three weeks ago. She raced wide and had little luck. Forget the run – she is better than that and at $11 this weekend and Jimmy Orman in the saddle I think she represents amazing each way value.

Buying Time (4) is from the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted yards. Heavily backed last start as well – didn’t fire when beaten by Situation Room (race 1 -11). Will strip fitter here – Boris Thornton will ride. Has drawn well in barrier 3 – however, the short price does not appeal to me.

Amortal (2) is trained by Mark Newnham – who has recently announced he is packing his bags and heading to Hong Kong to train. He will be an asset to their racing. This gelding won midweek last time out – comes to QLD looking to post consecutive wins. Ben Thompson will ride.

Miss Tambo (14) is a Gollan Racing runner with Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) riding. Last start midweek winner – could run a bold race at huge odds.

Selections:

11 – Eye Pea Oh
4 – Buying Time
2 – Amortal
14 – Miss Tambo
Rough chance – (6) Magnitudo

Race 5 THE GOLD JEWEL

Like one at odds here – Last Chance (4) from Shaun Dwyer with Jimmy Orman aboard. This runner was desperately unlucky last time out at Eagle Farm when beaten by Jetty (6) – he meets that runner two kilograms better for that loss. He is a seven-year-old and hasn’t won in 42 weeks – but maybe Orman can help change his fortunes.

Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have two solid chances in Tumbler Ridge (1) and Birriecart (9).

Tumbler Ridge (1) is the class runner – huge weight with Boris Thornton aboard. Has had a seven week freshen up after a solid effort in the Sunshine Cup but just ran out of fitness late.

Birriecart (9) is undefeated here at Doomben – 4 starts – 4 wins. He seemed to be underdone first up and knocked up late. Has a solid second up record with Ben Thompson riding – they have posted him as the pre post favourite – I am going to lay him.

Jetty (6) from the Munce Racing team was backed late last time out when first up and got the chocolates. He loved the ridiculous fast speed on that day and flew home wide and won easily. He probably won’t get that tempo here – but he does race well fresh and has a great second up record – KWT will ride.

Roman Aureus (5) loves this track – large odds – could sneak into the exotics and add some value.

Selections:

4 – Last Chance
1 – Tumbler Ridge
9 – Birriecart
6 – Jetty
Rough chance – (5) Roman Aureus

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie – open field here.

Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have a chance - Fetch (6) with KWT retaining the ride after he won on her first up. She has not won second up, but she looked like she had plenty of improvement in her.

Sweet Margot May (5) is resuming from the Robert Heathcote Racing yards. She is undefeated in her first up races – 3 wins from 3 starts – she must be considered – Ben Thompson aboard. He has a solid record when riding her and her recent barrier trial suggested that she is very forward.

I like the Kris Lees Racing runner right down the bottom of the weights – Willinga Beast (14) with Sam Collett to ride.

This three-year-old filly has raced in Listed and Group races. I just think she gets in so well here at the weights. Her first up run in the Listed Fireball at Randwick – she just seemed to peak late. The run was still nice. The blinkers come off here and the speed in the race probably entitles her to sit off the speed and work home late.

Isotope (1) carries the topweight with Jimmy Orman in the saddle. Her last prep was in Victoria in Group 1 and Group 3 races. A solid hit out in a barrier trial suggests that she is ready for a great preparation. Just some concerns over the weight – but she is the class runner – sometimes the cream just rises to the top!

Some rough chances to Mabel (7) from the Tracey Bartley yard in NSW. Winside (3) trained by Damien Batters looks well placed as well.

Selections:

14 – Willinga Beast
1 – Isotope
6 – Fetch
5 – Sweet Margot May
Rough chance – (7) Mabel & (3) Winside

Race 7 SKY RACING QTIS JEWEL – TWO YEAR OLDS

First leg of the Treble. The first of our main feature races is for the two-year-old runners.

Rupert’s House (4) won on debut five weeks ago. Ran some great sectionals and has been freshened up since that dynamic win. Trained in NSW by Bjorn Baker and Jimmy Orman retains the ride – drawn handy will run a bold race.

Les Ross Racing is well represented. Mishani Royale (8) has been running some super times. She has been amazing winning her last three starts all in slashing style. Ben Thompson will ride her again – I just have some reservations about her running out a solid 1200 metres under pressure.

The stablemate is Mishani Raider (3) with KWT to ride. Is around $31 in the markets. Was fresh last time out at Eagle Farm after a four week freshen up. She savaged the line late over 1000 metres. I think the extra distance will suit.

The Queen of Gold Coast racing Helen Page trains Trifling (9). This filly has won her past two starts over 1200 metres. On each of those occasions has been solid to the line – freshened up again for four weeks – it would be amazing to see Helen win a feature race.

Shot Of Whiskey (7) won on debut at the Sunshine Coast. The feature of this win was the slashing sectionals that he posted. Drawn wide in barrier 14 – Boris Thornton will ride for the Hoysted and O’Dea stables.

Selections:

4 – Rupert’s House
8 – Mishani Royale
3 – Mishani Raider
9 – Trifling
Rough chances – (7) Shot Of Whiskey

Race 8 CHANNEL 7 QTIS JEWEL – THREE YEAR OLDS

The second main feature race is for the three-year-old runners.

Tony Gollan trains All That Pizzazz (1) with Ben Thompson retaining the ride. Resumed with a super run – letting down late with a huge weight and disposing of the opposition in a noteworthy fashion. At the set weights conditions of this race, he meets his opposition at a distinct advantage – should be difficult to beat.

Desleigh Forster trains the filly She’sgottheboom (11) who was eased out of the race in her first up effort. A subsequent vet examination revealed no abnormalities. Has drawn barrier 1 and Jimmy Orman will ride. She has a few gear changes – has won second up – at best might be hard to hold out late.

En Pointe (15) is around the $41 mark from the Robert Heathcote Racing team. Resumed first up – had no luck was forced to race three wide and she wilted late. Will strip fitter. She has won second up – the blinkers go on for the first time and Larry Cassidy has been booked for the ride.

Spirit Queen (16) was a solid effort first up – I think the longer distance will assist her chances. Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted train this filly – Nikita Beriman has the ride and she will need some luck from barrier 14. Maybe each way.

Selections:

1 – All That Pizzazz
11 – Shesgottheboom
15 – En Pointe
16 – Spirit Queen
Rough chances – (9) Brookhaven

Race 9

Well, it is the last race! A massive field over 1350 metres.

Magnitudo (20) should make the field here – is a dual acceptor (race 4 – number 6). I am hoping that Lindsay Gough races her here with Malea Castle to ride with a massive 3-kilogram claim. Is down in weight after a solid race at this track and distance four weeks ago. Could be a good chance each way at $21.

Da Party Gal (15) is trained by Tony Gollan – Angela Jones in the saddle. She raced well first up and will strip fitter. Steps up in distance and has a solid record at this distance and track – keep safe.

Charge On (10) is trained by Adam Campton. He is having a wonderful run of success and continues to place his horses well. Elione Chaves will ride again. There has been some support in the early markets – this one could get the job done at around $10.

Mississippi Prince (7) is lightly raced with a superb record of 8 starts for 5 wins. Brent Guy trains this gelding with Mark Du Plessis riding. He is first up after a 26 week freshen up. He is $14 – he can race well fresh.

Selections:

20 – Magnitudo
15 – Da Party Gal
10 – Charge On
7 – Mississippi Prince
Rough chances – (12) Why We Drink & (17) Befana
