WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 25, 2023

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, February 23, 2023

Doomben this week where the track is rated ‘soft’ and the rail is out 3 metres for the entire circuit.

FLEMO and WINNO were on fire last weekend – 7 winners between us with our Saturday morning late mail posted on Facebook!

NRL season 2023 is only a week away – lets go for a Penrith and Melbourne Storm Grand Final. The Broncos will not make the final 8 and Dolphins will just avoid the wooden spoon with New Zealand getting whacked with it this season!

Straight into it this week.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Selections:

2 – Felix The Scat
8 – O’Polly
5 – Storm Force Ten
1 – Adelad

Race 2

Selections:

4 – Namakwa
8 – Coup De Tonnere
7 – Chateaux Park
2 – Scarlet Tufty

Race 3

Selections:

11 – Eye Pea Oh
9 – Sabalenka
1 – Da Party Girl
6 – Baristasista

Race 4

Selections:

4 – En Point
1 – She’sgotheboom
13 – Polarising
11 – Spanish Angels

Race 5

Selections:

7 – Clyde
6 – Regal Pom
9 – Santero
4 – Rogue Rocker

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie – even field here.

Despite the wide barrier the Tony Gollan and Angela Jones team combine here with Situation Room (15). Has the blinkers off here. Last start over 1000 metres was only warming up late – the 1200 metres of this race should be of benefit.

Adam Campton is looking for another city winner with Lord Markel (1) with Jimmy Orman to ride. Was a steep task first up at Randwick – is second up and the effort first up should see some improvement.

Overseas (8) could cause a tsunami and at a huge price of $35 could cause a major upset here.

Selections:

15 – Situation Room
1 – Lord Markel
8 – Overseas
13 – Buying Time
Rough chance – (6) Why We Drink

Race 7

First leg of the Treble.

Chris Anderson’s pair Streaka (11) and Gemelon Bolt (4) look well placed – he could quinella the race!

Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have a trio of solid chances as well – Fetch (12), Stellar Magic (14) and Hold On Honey (6) – it could be a sticky situation with these two stables fighting out the race in my opinion.

Selections:

11 – Streaka
4 – Gemelon Bolt
6 – Hold On Honey
12 – Fetch
Rough chances – (14) Stellar Magic & (8) Schiller Bay

Race 8

Tough field here.

Sea Palling (10) from the Barry Lockwood yards has solid form fresh. Has been trialling well and has drawn well. Some nice each way odds as well around $15.

Rangi Toa (4) is second up for the new stable – Alicia Willick, and Samantha Collett will ride. Has drawn well and is around the $10 mark in the betting.

May play to punt wide here. If Tenzing (20) gets into the field from the Gollan Racing yards he will be super competitive for the new stable after coming from New Zealand. There has been heavy support for this runner since the markets have been posted.

Selections:

10 – Sea Palling
4 – Rangi Toa
8 – Head Legislator
7 – Whitewater
Rough chances – (11) Spirit If Beans & (20) Tenzing & (3) Magnitudo

Race 9

Well, it is the last race!

I see that pest “Last Race Larry” – Larry Cassidy has a ride here. This is the one that he rode a fortnight ago for trainer Louise White. It was $51 and he destroyed many punters Quaddies and Trebles – we all had to eat bread and butter that night! This weekend I am saying he cannot win! Here comes the egg on the face moment!

I like the John Smerdon trained runner Edison (4), who will be ridden by Boris Thornton. He was first up in the Magic Millions Cup for the new stable and I thought his run was full of merit and he will derive some benefit from that. He has had a 37 day freshen up – a solid recent trial as well – he had plenty up his sleeve. I think all goes well here - each way in the last at around the $17 mark.

Keep Roman Aureus (6) safe from the Brian Wakefield stable. Has had some gear changes and Jimmy Orman will ride – he could win on a broomstick at the moment. The irony is that Larry Cassidy usually rides this one – maybe he missed his chance to claim another ‘Last Race Larry’ title.

Dr Why Not (12) is another runner that needs to be watched. Comes out of the recent Magic Millions race day – that was much stronger than this. Michael Murphy will ride by Lindsay Gough – always goes well on this track.

Selections:

4 – Edison
6 – Roman Aureus
12 – Dr Why Not
9 – Animate
Rough chances – (2) Cepheus & (15) Joviality
