WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, DECEMBER 31, 2022

By Darren Winningham | Friday, December 30, 2022

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 31 DECEMBER 2022 (NEW YEARS EVE)

Doomben this week where the track is rated ‘Soft’ and the rail is out 4 metres for the entire circuit.

I think we may race on a wetter track with rain forecast.

2022 has come to an end – 2023 is upon us.

I am certain you will be out celebrating and pondering what lies for us all in 2023 – higher interest rates – more travel – the Australian dollar increasing – a new job – or maybe a new lifestyle change.

Here are my 2023 predictions:

1. NRL – Penrith will defend and remain premiers.
2. AFL – Geelong will be premiers
3. State of Origin – NSW will win the series 2-1
4. Magic Millions 2023 winner – The Novelist from the Waterhouse & Bott stables
5. Magic Millions 2023 Guineas winner – Revolutionary Miss from the Snowden stables
6. 2023 Stradbroke winner – Sheza Belter trained by the Snowden stables
7. I think it may be time for a new car for me – possibly another Subaru
8. FWD Mile – 30 April at Sha Tin Hong Kong – Golden Sixty will win the race and prove he is a champion miler.
9. Zac Purton – will break the all-time season wins in Hong Kong – 170 set by Joao Moreira
10. Just for Josh Fleming, James Goves and Joshua Unwin and the rest of you BRONCO supporters – they will not finish in the top 10 on the ladder!

Into the tips this weekend.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
______________________________________________________________________

Race 1

Tough way to open the day.

Gollan Racing has Inasec (13) resuming with Angela Jones in the saddle on the minimum weight. This mare races well fresh and was solid in her first preparation against some quality horses.

Lime Soda (12), who is at huge odds, is trained by Mark Currie who seems to be having some good fortune lately – keep safe with Ben Thompson to ride.

Chris Anderson trains Rubiquitous (2). Resumed with a massive effort first up. Loves this track and looks well placed – just the huge weight concerns me – Jaden Lloyd will ride.

Selections:

13 – Inasec
12 – Lime Soda
2– Rubiquitous
6 – Hold On Honey
Rough chances – (10) Way To The Stars & (7) Liza With A Zee

Race 2

Two years old runners face the starter here – a very small field with four runners to go around.

The Snowden Racing team pair with Jamie Kah with their Wyong Magic Millions winner – Sovereign Fund (2) here. He was impressive at Wyong, and I think he would have benefitted from that run – look for some more improvement on the way to the 2023 Magic Millions.

Mishani Renegade (1) has done nothing wrong - 3 from 3 in his career. Trained by Les Ross Racing and Jimmy Orman will resume his unbeaten association with the gelding – he could create havoc and defeat these interstate runners.

The Ballarat winner of the Magic Millions is trained by Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young – Sunsource (3) will face the starter here – James McDonald will ride him. Not sure how he will go first time in QLD, however, the tiny field will assist him.

Selections:

2 – Sovereign Fund
1 – Mishani Renegade
3 – Sunsource
4 – Risky Investment

Race 3

Antino (2) ran a super race last time out from the wide barrier – trained by Tony Gollan and ridden by Jimmy Orman he had to be used up from a wide gate. Look for a more conservative ride this weekend.

I like Teranga (12) from the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted yards to cause an upset second up over the mile with Jaden Lloyd to ride. Was a solid effort first up and loves the mile – look for her to create havoc with any luck.

Ghostwriter (8) has the tongue tie going on – could improve again.

Roller Coaster (9) worked home well last time out over 1600 metres at Eagle Farm – he would have stripped better for that effort and has James McDonald riding.

Selections:

12 – Teranga
2 – Antino
9 – Roller Coaster
8 – Ghostwriter

Race 4

Ayahuasca (13) won on debut for the new stable – Gollan Racing. Jamie Kah rides her second up. If the track is rain affected, she will be even harder to beat.

Fleetwood Maca (2) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted and drops back, in my opinion, to a more suitable distance of 1350 metres from the mile. Jaden Lloyd will ride her.

Mix (4) has been racing consistently from the Lee Freedman stable on the Gold Coast – Boris Thornton has the ride. I think with the softer surface he will improve as well.

Selections:

13 – Ayahuasca
2 – Fleetwood Maca
4 – Mix
6 – Dash For Dreams

Race 5

Distance race over 2020.

Street Dancer (7) is trained by David Vandyke and he loves this track and goes well at the distance. Michael Cahill retains the ride. I think that he goes better on a soft surface – raced at Eagle Farm last time out and seemed to have not much luck in the straight – comes back to Doomben where he has won three out of four starts - $7 - looks well placed for mine.

A big watch on the locally trained London Banker (2) trained by Kelly Schweida and ridden by Jimmy Orman. This runner likes these longer distances and probably raced last time out as if he was looking for 2000 metres.

Bigboyroy (3) is trained by Chris Waller Racing and is second up with James McDonald in the saddle. His last win was across the road at Eagle Farm with James McDonald in the saddle – that was 30 weeks ago. Can history repeat itself?

Aramayo (1) was great last weekend here over a mile. Has not won in 115 weeks – I cannot see him winning the race for trainer Sam Kavanagh – however, the magical touch of Jamie Kah may assist.

Selections:

7 – Street Dancer
3 – Bigboyroy
2 – London Banker
1 – Aramayo

Race 6 Vo Rogue Plate (Group 3)

First leg of the Quaddie – even field here.

I think the favourite will get beaten – Count Da Beans (4).

He was unlucky last start – James McDonald will ride – I just not to sure that he will run out the 1350 metres. Happy to be proven wrong – time will tell.

Stroll (6) won well last time out at good odds (I did tip her). She has always given me the view that she will possibly get up to a mile – so I expect her to be strong at the end of the race – Boris Thornton will ride.

Fashion Legend (2) steps up in grade again this weekend. He was good in restricted grade last time out when heavily backed to win. He is trained by Richard & Will Freedman and, yes, he is up in grade – but the way he finished off the 1400 metres at Eagle Farm would suggest he will thrive at this distance – Ben Thompson retains the ride in this Group race, and he is around the $9 in markets.

Do not underestimate the Edmonds Racing runner Storm The Fortress (3) who is undefeated in three career starts. He was held up – struck trouble in the race he won at the Gold Coast four weeks ago and still climbed off the canvas and got the win. Martin Harley will ride again – he could be the other one to upset them here.

Selections:

2 – Fashion Legend
6 – Stroll
4 – Count Da Beans
3 – Storm The Fortress

Race 7 The Buffering

First leg of the Treble.

This race is over 1350 metres.

The Godolphin pair look well placed by James Cummings. No doubt Nacim Dilmi will be in town watching them go around. I like the effort of Zethus (5) last weekend when he stormed home over 1200 metres – up in distance should suit him and Jamie Kah is in the saddle.

The stablemate is Brigantine (8) with James McDonald aboard. Was heavily backed last start at Randwick and was ridden handy. Personally, I think he is more competitive when he is ridden a bit quieter. There is some solid tempo in the race – he probably looks best placed in the race with the speed on – but Zethus (5) did go well last week and is better odds – they both will handle a wet track.

Taksu (1) from Joe Pride yards in NSW makes the trip north. He raced wide last start – goes great second up and if the track gets wet – he is the one to be on – Glyn Schofield is coming up for one ride – can he do the same as his son last weekend and grab one ride for one win!

Ucalledit (4) is from Kris Lees Racing and has been racing superb. This is probably the toughest field he has faced – but his form has been sensational – just concerned with the large weight – maybe the handicapper has finally caught up with him – Andrew Mallyon gets back aboard – looks to keep his 100% winning combination on this gelding.

Selections:

5 – Zethus
8 – Brigantine
1 – Taksu
4 – Ucalledit

Race 8 Nudgee Stakes (Listed)

This race is over 1200 metres. I think if the race was at set weights, we may have a few different results here.

You must respect the NSW runners that have come here for this race. The Mark Newnham trained Sneaky Paige (7) – it does not matter what the track conditions are, this mare will be right in this. She raced last time out at Wyong in a race where she was heavily supported and had no luck in the running and then was desperately unlucky in the straight. They would say a good thing beaten! Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will ride her here and she will race in behind the speed and be hard to hold out late.

Richard & William Freedman train Juan Diva (2) and Jimmy Orman keeps the ride on her. She has been beaten narrowly in both of her starts in Queensland. On both occasions the weight has been the telling factor late. This weekend she meets the opposition better at the weights due to the conditions of the race and is deserving of some Black Type winning statistics against her name – she will be hard to beat.

Gollan Racing has Salateen (5) in the race. Hasn’t really shown much this preparation so far with some solid enough efforts – but nothing too outstanding. She loves this Doomben track with three wins from four starts here and thrives on wet tracks. She may just be the one to beat if she gets some luck in the straight and can make a late surge at them – Brodie Loy takes the ride.

The topweight is Kiku (1) trained by Chris Waller. Has been sent to Queensland looking for a win – James McDonald will ride. She has had an eight week freshen up and loves wet tracks. Probably better suited over a little further – however, she has a good first up record – six starts – 2 wins and 3 seconds – keep safe.

Rough chances to Enterprise Pomme (12) and the last start winner Glorious Ruby (11).

Selections:

7 – Sneaky Paige
2 – Juan Diva
5 – Salateen
1 – Kiku
Rough chance – (12) Enterprise Pomme & (11) Glorious Ruby

Race 9

Well, it is the last race! Time to get on those dancing shoes and grab some drinks and see if you can last to midnight!

I suppose I can say this now – see you all next year!

Orbisyn (6) is trained by David Vandyke and appeared to have the race won last time out at the Gold Coast until he was defeated in the final stride by Fifteen Rounds who was sensationally backed (halved his price) and won. There was nothing wrong with that effort. He can lead or take a sit – likes wet tracks and does have a great winning record at Doomben. Dropping back to the 1200 metres here as well is probably ideal for him as I think you will find him very strong going to the line – Michael Cahill will ride.

Tilianam (14) will be ridden by Jamie Kah for Tony Gollan. She has a tonne of ability – she just seems to find one better on the day. Maybe this weekend down on the minimum she gets her chance to get back into the winner’s stalls at Doomben for connections. She probably doesn’t want the track any worse than slow – but she has drawn ideally in barrier 2 and should get a nice run-in transit.

Rainbow Connection (3) could be the topical tip of the day if it rains – hopefully it dries up and the rain dissipates for the New Year’s Eve fireworks. This gelding did not see out the 1400 metres last time out. Back to a more suitable distance and with Brodie Loy in the saddle looks well placed by trainer Matthew Dunn.

Direct (2) comes from the Lloyd Kennewell stables in South Australia. He thrives on wet tracks – just have some reservations about him running out 1200 metres. Zac Spain has been booked to ride him and has a unique record aboard the gelding – 3 rides for 3 wins. Barrier 11 may be some trouble as well.

The Big Goodbye (4) will he say goodbye to the opposition and 2022 for the QLD Rogues syndicate? I say not – however – if the track gets into the heavy range – he will be the one to have in your selections – he eats mud and will be suited by a deteriorating track.

Selections:

6 – Orbisyn
14 – Tilianam
3 – Rainbow Connection
4 – The Big Goodbye
Rough chance – (2) Direct
