PRINCE OF BOOM WILL TAKE AN UNBEATEN RECORD INTO THE GROUP 2 SIRES PRODUCE STAKES AT EAGLE FARM

By Graham Potter | Monday, May 24, 2021

Prince Of Boom will take an unbeaten record into the Group 2 Sires Produce Stakes over 1400m at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The two-year-old, Spirit Of Boom gelding could not have been more impressive to date, winning on debut at the Sunshine Coast by 4.80 lengths on heavy going before backing up six days later and stepping straight into Group 2 company where he scored another decisive win in the Champagne Classic, this time by 2,50 lengths on soft going.

“Prince of Boom has an outstanding temperament, and his ability is huge,” said trainer Robert Heathcote.

“You can argue that he has won on a heavy track and a soft 7, so how effective will he be on the top of the ground?

“That’s a fair question and we don’t know the answer because he hasn’t been there yet, but he showed in that last run that he can take a position from a good gate. He showed at Caloundra in his first start that he can come from well back in the field … so he is versatile and he can run time.

"I think those that he raced against in the Champagne, he has their measure. Ranch Hand and couple of these ones coming from Sydney are bringing different form-lines so that is another factor to consider.

“I am also very mindful of the fact that this is his first racing preparation and he has only ever had two runs in his life.

“He is racing like he has been there forever, but the reality is he is still inexperienced and that is why we have to temper things a little bit and not get ahead of ourselves

“Having said that, you always want to retain an air of optimism with young horses. Every now and then out of the flames can come a golden nugget and that’s what happened with Rothfire (Heathcote’s star of last season) and now with Prince Of Boom.

“I’ve actually compared Prince Of Boom to Rothfire. That comparison wasn’t about ability. It was about the beautiful demeanour this horse has. When they have ability, a cool and calm demeanour goes a long way to allowing a horse to run to its full potential and that’s a plus Prince Of Boom has on his side.

“Like I said, we are dealing with a young horse so we have to temper expectations moving forward, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting when you are aiming at a R1 million race like the Sires Produce … particularly as Prince Of Boom certainly has done everything we’ve asked of him so far.”
