WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, APRIL 10, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, April 8, 2021

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 10 APRIL 2021

This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN with the track rated “HEAVY” and the rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit. The track will be rain affected so I will look for some mud larks.

Just a brief preview this weekend with a massive day in Sydney – the major racing is down in NSW this weekend.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Ahooshu (1) is trained at Rockhampton by Graeme Green. He comes off a magnificent effort in the Two-year-old JEWEL at the Gold Coast last start on a heavy track (it was very heavy) when he ran a gallant second to Sweet Dolly. That is terrific form for this race.

Military Gambler (3) from the Munce Racing yards caused a major upset in winning here a fortnight ago. Justin Huxtable retains the ride, and he looks like one that may well go on with the job this weekend.

Startantes (5) is a Robert Heathcote Racing runner with Taylor Marshall to ride. They combined last start here and could not run down the winner Military Gambler (3). With the extra distance and the wet conditions look out for a marked improvement.

Selections:

1 – Ahooshu
3 – Military Gambler
5 – Startantes
8 – Vienna Express

Race 2

Humbolt Current (2), trained Chris Waller Racing, comes off a nice win last start here with Jim Byrne in the saddle. He loomed up and put the opposition to the sword in that event – if he gets through the heavy conditions, he will be certain to be hard to beat here again here.

Sir Barnabus (4) is a Jason Edwards trained runner. He goes well here at Doomben and, with Michael Cahill to ride, could cause an upset.

Romankash (3) is trained by Matt Kropp and comes off two consecutive wins at Eagle Farm. My concern here this weekend is that he has raced here eight times and never run a place – maybe he can change those stats with the masterful Michael Rodd in the saddle.

Selections:

2 – Humbolt Current
4 – Sir Barnabus
3 – Romakash
8 – Seat of Power

Race 3

Captivator (7) is trained by Gregory Booth and will be ridden again by Michael Hellyer. Last start he was sent out at long odds (and tipped by me) and put in a great effort when run down late by Guise. He will not be those odds this weekend, however he does like a wet track and will be incredibly competitive here this weekend.

Seeingisbelieving (4) is a Gollan Racing runner who is third up this weekend. He just seemed to run out of condition last start and will strip much fitter this weekend. Jim Byrne rides.

Kubrik (3) is suspect on a heavy surface, however, has been racing consistently. Luke Dittman will give him every chance.

Cloak (1) is second up here and has an excellent record second up. David Vandyke has been having a good run of late and this runner will be right in this race. Ryan Maloney is aboard.

Selections:

4 – Seeingisbelieving
7 – Captivator
1 – Cloak
3 – Kubrik

Race 4

David Vandyke trains Amiche (13) – he could post a race to race double with his runner in the previous race. She won first up here on a heavy track, so the track conditions will not be a drama. Stephanie Thornton retains the ride. She goes up in distance, up in grade and down in weight and looks a solid chance here.

Molly’s Rocking (12) is on the quick back up from last weekend when she was carrying a massive weight. This weekend she drops in weight, and even less for apprentice Adin Thompson. She is trained by Lindsay Hatch and at $41 she represents great value.

Fender (4) is trained in NSW by Brett Cavanough. The gelding is first up here and loves wet tracks, so he gets conditions to suit. He had a solid hit out in a trial a fortnight ago at Scone and looks well placed in this grade. Just concerned that he looks at Doomben for the first time and is first up with a big weight on a heavy track. Ryan Maloney is a strong rider and will get the best out of him here.

Genzai The Wolf (9), trained by David Murphy, won last start with a well-timed run by Justin Huxtable. This weekend he steps up in distance and gets onto a heavy track – but, with Sheriden Tomlinson taking 3 kilograms off his back, he gets in well.

Selections:

13 – Amiche
12 – Molly’s Rocking
4 – Fender
9 – Genzai The Wolf

Race 5

Express Princess (7) returns to Doomben where she won three starts ago. Since then, she has gone back to Sydney and ran well on some wet tracks. She returns to QLD to look for another win for the Richard & Michael Freedman team (who won the 2021 Golden Slipper) who are becoming a formidable power in racing as their stable continues to strengthen. Jim Byrne rides her again this weekend – she may be a little soft attempting to get the mile, but she looks well placed.

Hallowed Girl (5) is trained by Chris Anderson (5) and will be ridden by Larry Cassidy who returns from a recent wrist injury. This mare ran last start over 1805 metres and drops back to the mile. I think the mile is more her go and she will like coming back to Doomben – she is unknown on a heavy surface.

Mosshiki (8) is trained by Rob Heathcote – he loves the mile and wet tracks and will be right in this race.

Selections:

7 – Express Princess
5 – Hallowed Girl
8 – Mosshiki
9 – Love Yers All

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie this weekend.

Better Get Set (4) trained by Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted has been racing consistently. She was run down late he a fortnight ago and this weekend steps up to the mile for the first time with Ben Thompson to ride. I just think if she can get a quiet ride in behind the speed then she will be able to win this race.

Abracadazzle (2) posted a long overdue win last start for Gollan Racing with Michael Rodd in the saddle. This weekend they combine again at Doomben this time. I do think the mile is as far as she wants to go and she will be hard to toss.

Kasear (12) ran second last start to Abracadazzle (2). She is trained by Lorraine Erhart and Sheriden Tomlinson stays on the filly – she is well placed here.

Keep your eye on the Tony Gollan trained Deal of Power (11) who won her maiden at the Gold Coast last start. She settled back in the pack and then made up a tonne of ground to go away and win impressively. She steps up in grade and to Saturday company – but she could cause an upset here at $15.

Selections:

4 – Better Get Set
2 – Abracadazzle
12 – Kasear
11 – Deal Of Power
Rough chance – (13) Beg Me

Race 7

The first leg of the treble here.

Pinnacle Prince debuts in QLD for the Brett Cavanough stables based in NSW. He looks an impressive type with three wins and a second from four starts. He is undefeated first up in two campaigns and have performed well on soft tracks. Untried on heavy surfaces – but he does appear to be above average.

Simply Fly (1) is trained by Rex Lipp - an in-form trainer who posted a winning double at Eagle Farm last week. He came to town with two runners and they both won! This gelding has won all four starts since resuming from a spell. He did win the JEWEL - three-year-old edition - last start on the Gold Coast. He thrives on heavy tracks and Stephanie Thornton stays on him. He has a massive 60.5 kilograms to contend with this weekend, however, he is a quality runner that appears to be going places.

Tony Gollan Racing is well represented with Bleu Zebra (8) and Snappy Reply (11). Bleu Zebra (8) has won her past two starts here at Doomben with Georgina Cartwright riding. They combine here again this weekend – a massive $12 on offer for this runner. Yes, there is some concern with her on a wet track, but she looks like a nice runner.

Snappy Reply (11) is $21 and second up this weekend with Jim Byrne to ride. She looked like she needed the last run and was fractious at the stalls – if she presents better in the ring and is more settled, she looks a great each way chance.

Zingalong (5) loves a wet track – if the rain is around and the track deteriorates – keep this one safe.

Selections:

4 – Pinnacle Prince
1 – Simply Fly
8 – Bleu Zebra
11 – Snappy Reply
Rough chance – (5) Zingalong

Race 8

This is strong race. Racecourse Road (2) is trained by Kelly Schweida and resumed on a bog heavy track at the Gold Coast for an impressive win with Ronnie Stewart riding. They combine again this weekend over 1200 metres, and he will have no drama coping with a wet track. He is a solid performer early in each preparation.

Jadentom (1) resumed on the same day at the Gold Coast and struck the same heavy track. Lindsay Hatch has this seven-year-old mare flying. A good second up record – but just some concerns with the massive weight she has been allocated.

Flash Aah (4) loves wet tracks and won at the Gold Coast last start over 1400 metres. I am a little concerned about the drop back in distance – but trainer Mitchell Fry has this gelding go well. Madeleine Wishart retains the ride and her 3-kilogram claim brings him in nicely.

Apprentice Adin Thompson and trainer Chris Anderson combine again with Epic Girl (8). Personally, I think she is a much better proposition across the road at Eagle Farm – but I know when she strikes form and starts winning she normally can string a few wins together.

Selections:

2 – Racecourse Road
1 – Jadentom
4 – Flash Aah
8 – Epic Girl

Race 9

The last race – an extremely competitive field.

I think that the solid speed in the race may assist with my tip who resumes here for the Kelly Schweida stables - Cellarmaid (14) – who normally performs better over longer distances. First up over 1350 metres she has raced well fresh in the past and she loves wet tracks. Despite drawing wide, I think she will settle at the rear of the field and Taylor Marshall will bring her wide in the straight and let her balance and finish over the top of them - $21 she looks well placed.

Royal Hale (2) another Golan Racing runner is second up. I think he was unlucky last start when he was caught wide and still finished strongly and was beaten under a length. With a nicer run in transit, I think he is a massive chance in the last race. The Ryan Maloney and Tony Gollan partnership has a wonderful strike rate – can it continue here?

Gem Of Scotland (5) is another Rex Lipp runner who resumed last start on the bog heavy track at the Gold Coast first up – to be fair a tough task! There are gear changes with a nose band and a tongue tie going on her this weekend for the second up run – Stephanie Thornton is in the saddle. Can the gear change get Rex a 2 from 2 result again this weekend – this time at Doomben?

Accession (3) is third up after a length 49-week spell. She has been racing well in her first two starts from that spell at Rosehill, but it appears the Chris Waller team seem to think she is a better chance of winning a race in QLD and shifted her to the Gold Coast stables. Luke Dittman rides her this weekend and despite being $15 in the markets must not be overlooked. She does like wet tracks.

Selections:

14 – Cellarmaid
2 - Royal Hale
5 – Gem of Scotland
3 – Accession
Rough chance – (4) Guntantes
