VANNA GIRL IS ALL CLASS IN IMPRESSIVE FIRST-UP WIN

There is simply no substitute for class … a fact that is brought home time and again in racing.
The latest evidence … watching the Toby and Trent Edmonds trained Vanna Girl ($3.70) streaking home to an eye-catching first-up win under the steadying burden of 59kg in the fifth race at Doomben, an Open Handicap over 1350m.
Constant Flight ($3.90) set the early pace and the David Vandyke runner remained the target in the home straight kicking on strongly enough, but he was no match for Vanna Girl over the final over the 150m.
Robbie Fradd took Vanna Girl back early but saved ground on the rail until angling out in the sweep to the turn. Vanna Girl was still some four lengths off the speed when Fradd pulled her out four wide at the top of the straight.
Vanna Girl took a couple of strides to settle to the task at hand, but then she began to stretch out with meaning at which stage there was only going to be one result.
Constant Flight stayed on for second ahead of his stable companion Cloak ($4.80) who filled third placing. None of the others flattered at all.
“Going in, with weights and measures, you know she is just far too good for those horses, but you get nervous,” said co-trainer Toby Edmonds.
‘She hasn’t put a foot wrong this time in and she has gone really well at home.
“It is just good when a good horse comes back and performs as expected. She is a bloody good mare.
“She was the class horse in the race,” agreed Fradd. “Carrying the big weight first up was an issue, but she handled that extremely well. She travelled really good the whole race.
“When I peeled out, I still had time to sit on her. When she let down she put them away quickly. In the end the win was very soft. There was still a lot in hand.
“In saying that, she will come on a lot from this run. It is pretty exciting. That means next time she can improve two lengths.
“She has been in the big league before and she hasn’t disappointed.”
