DOOM OCT 07 - JENNABEE FINDS WINNING TOUCH

By Graham Potter | Thursday, October 8, 2009

Doomben, October 07, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 8m.
Class 4 Handicap (Fillies & Mares) - 1350m. Time: 1-19.90.
1 Jennabee; 2 Hearty Laughter; 3 Bloomin Thunder.

The Matt Kropp trained Jennabee produced a barn-storming run down the outside of the track to get up to beat the free-running Hearty Laughter in the last couple of strides.

Hearty Laughter had the speed to come across from a wide barrier and skip to the front early. By way of contrast Jennebee showed little inclination to get involved early and jockey Jason Taylor had little option but to let her settle in the second half of the field.

When apprentice jockey Michael Hellyer gave Hearty Laughter a breather and steadied the speed mid-race, the field bunched up appreciably and Taylor elected to switch Jennabee out wider so she could have a clear passage to the turn.

The downside of that was that Jennabee straightened five wide having covered much more ground than the front-running Hearty Laughter, the horse she would ultimately have to run down if she was to win. The positive was Taylor had taken luck out of the equation. With a free run to the line, the result was there for the taking, if Jennabee was good enough.

Hearty Laughter, having been saved for her effort, kicked on strongly early in the straight to suddenly have the chasing pack scrambling after her. Only two runners emerged as dangers. Bloomin Thunder was quickening but her challenge was only going to be worth a minor placing, while Jennabee was making up ground on the outside. The latter, with her long stride, built winning momentum and went past Hearty Laughter close to the line to secure the third success of her career.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Jason Taylor: “No, things didn’t really go according to plan. The way that she raced last start I thought she would be up a lot closer.

“She seemed to get away a bit average ... it took her a few strides to actually get into stride, which is completely opposite to how she was the other day. So I was a little bit concerned ... and the pace steadied, which was going to suit horses on the pace. But at the 600 she just got hold of the bridle and tracked up to them. She just sustained that run in the straight and won well.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Sheeza Drama (A. Pattillo) blundered at the start. Ice Delight (M. Speers), which was a little slow to begin, had to be steadied shortly after the start when tightened for room between Simian Express (V. Schubert) and Grand Lady (L. Cassidy) which, after making contact with Mio Cavallo (C. Reith), shifted in.

Sheeza Drama (A. Pattillo) commenced to race very fiercely near the 1200m and on several occasions had to be restrained off the heels of Simian Express. Sheeza Drama, when restrained, shifted out, making contact with Mio Cavallo (C. Reith). Jennabee (J. Taylor), which was racing behind Mio Cavallo, was hampered as a consequence. Trainer C. Williamson was advised that a warning was being placed on Sheeza Drama regarding its racing manners. Ice Delight (M. Speers) over-raced when racing wide.

Apprentice J. Wood, rider of Bloomin Thunder, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Sweet Marie (A. Spinks), resulting in that horse having to be checked to avoid the heels of Bloomin Thunder. Simian Express (V. Schubert), which was racing to the outside of Blooming Thunder, also had to be steadied to avoid the heels of that horse which continued to shift out. J .Wood was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 9 meetings, to commence at midnight, 11 October and to expire at midnight, 24 October 2009.
