WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, JULY 27, 2019

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 25, 2019

EAGLE FARM RACES – SATURDAY 27 JULY 2019

Eagle Farm this weekend with the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is 8 metres out for the entire course. The rail keeps getting further out each week – last week they raced wide and I expect them to be nearly coming down the outside fence this weekend if they continue with the pattern of racing we saw last weekend.

It looks like our 2018/19 premiership winners have been decided:

Jockey – Jeff Lloyd
Apprentice – Baylee Nothdurft
Trainer – Tony Gollan

Congratulations to them all for their successes across the past 12 months.

My fearless predictions for 2019/20 season:

Jockey – Jim Byrne – Matthew McGillivray – Ryan Maloney
Apprentice – Baylee Nothdurft - Jackson Murphy
Trainer – Tony Gollan

Oh – nearly forgot – NSW to win Origin again for the third successive year – cop that Will Allam!

Well nine races for decision – it is time for my preview.
I would suggest you bet with some caution until it is determined whether leaders have an advantage with the rail out so far!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

**************************************************************************************************

Race 1

A small field to start the day off over 1840 metres.

Victory Eight (5) from the Trevor Miller stables has won his past two starts – looking for a hat trick of wins this weekend with Jim Byrne in the saddle. Last start after he won Jim presented some of the owners’ children with some goggles after the race – maybe we will see the same celebrations this weekend.

Master Zephyr (3) has had a month between runs and some gear changes. I think back on top of the ground he is a genuine chance at around the $14.

Robbie Fradd rides Torgersen (1) on a quick back up after racing last weekend. The blinkers come off for this run.

Selections: 5-3-1-2

*************************************************************************************************

Race 2

The two-year old’s race here.

Matthew Dunn has Karaja (1) and Cinco Star (3) in the race. Karaja (1) is coming off a last start win at Doomben but goes up in the weight here for that win. Cinco Star (3) was first up at Grafton in their feature two-year old race over the Carnival and I think that run was okay, and he will be much fitter for that outing.

Toby Edmonds has Champagne Jet (5) in the race – last start she ran a good second to Karaja (1) and will probably benefit from the run. She will get back but with the claim for apprentice Corey Bayliss it may just be enough to see her turn the tables on that last start result.

Gary Moore from Randwick has snuck one of his runners up here this weekend – Nuclear Summitt (11). The two recent barrier trials have been solid and with Ronnie Stewart in the saddle poses a rough chance. He is still a maiden but has raced in some nice quality races already in his career. If there is any support for this one it may be best to follow the money.

Underwood (7) raced in the two-year-old race at Grafton for Billy Healey. She did not have the best of luck in running and did fight on well late in the straight. She will probably race handy and given any luck could finish in the placings or win. I will cop a bagging from Healey for this assessment for sure and certain!

Selections: 5-1-3-7 rough chance 11

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

I like the Michael Costa trained Malahide (12) coming off a run in the Sunshine Coast Guineas on a heavy track where she struggled on the going. Go back to the Daybreak Lover (Listed) where she ran a gallant second to Signore Fox. That form holds her in good stead here.

Tardis (9) from Edmonds Racing ran well at the Sunshine Coast last start. The heavy surface probably wasn’t to her liking either. Back on top of the ground – watch for an improved effort. Ryan Maloney takes the ride.

Adoradancer (10) normally races very well second up. She was only beaten an eyelash first up at the Sunshine Coast. She should race in a forward position and Dale Smith will be eager to grab a winner!

The Brian Wakefield trained Jardin Rouge (5) has been very well supported since the markets opened firming from $8 to $4.40. She has a tremendous race record with 8 starts for 5 wins and a placing. She won first up at Ipswich in a good effort. Has had a month between runs and won a barrier trial last week in good style. She will race handy on the speed with Larry Cassidy in the saddle.

Selections: 12-9-5-10

*************************************************************************************************

Race 4

This is a small field.

Manaya (5) looks well placed here. My only concern is that she gets back in her races and sometimes can run into hinderance in the straight. I think with the small field this weekend, on a good track, we will see the best of her.

Rod Northam trains After All That (7) and he stormed home in the Ramornie. He has a great second up record and with a firm track he will be right in the finish this weekend.

Wonder Boom (4) comes off a win at the Rockhampton Carnival. Maybe he can go on with the winning form now.

Matthew Dunn has two runners here. Sovereign Nation (1) who has the winkers off and blinkers on for this run. Maybe that will see an improved effort. The other runner is Zamex (9) who has been racing without much luck.

Selections: 5-7-4-1 rough chance 9

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

The race has been decimated with early scratchings.

I think the race is between Seat Of Power (1) and Borazon (6).

Seat Of Power is the short priced favourite coming off a recent solid win at Toowoomba. He is trained by Michael Costa and looks like he is progressive. Ryan Plumb comes to town for a rare occasion to ride this one again.

Chris Waller trains Borazon (6) from his Gold Coast stables who is second up here. He ran in Group races over the Winter Carnival and coming back to this restricted grade – maybe he can show up second start this preparation at a distance that will suit him better than the 1350 metres when he resumed.

A pretty average field now the race has many scratchings.

Selections: 6-1-10-12

***************************************************************************************************

Race 6

A massive open field this week for the first leg of our Quaddie.

John O’Shea brings Saving (4) north to Queensland looking for some firmer tracks. His run last start at Gosford was solid when he raced handy and was headed in the straight and fought on to go down narrowly. He will run the distance right out here.

The topweight is Plumaro (1) trained by Kevin Kemp and to be ridden by Nick Keal – I think his first ever Saturday city ride. Last weekend this runner went around over a mile here and raced as if he was looking for longer – his sustained run in the straight suggests that he is perfectly placed here this weekend if he can come off the short back up. Nick Keal’s 3-kilogram allowance appeals here as well with the conditions of the race.

Red Chase (2) was second last weekend in the same race as Plumaro (1). He finished off the race nicely as well for the Desleigh Forster stable – he will be competitive again this weekend.

If you are looking for an extra rough chance at around $26 I would strongly suggest Blue Comet (3) from the Noel Doyle stables on the Gold Coast to be ridden by Brad Stewart. This runner ran a wonderful race in the Grafton Guineas when he placed third. Since then he won a barrier trial on the Gold Coast. I think the key to this runner will be the good track – I really think that he will perform well on a firm surface.

Selections: 4-1-2-3 rough chances 7 & 8

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

Another massive field here – the day just gets tougher!

I think if an emergency here gets in the field at $21 he is an enormous chance – The Big Eater (19) trained by Matthew John Dunn at Beaudesert coming off two recent wins. I think that he will appreciate the long Eagle Farm track and will give you a great sight if he makes his way into the field this weekend.

If he doesn’t make the field, I will go for Diplomatic Miss (13) from the Steven O’Dea Racing team. She has drawn woefully again this weekend in barrier 18. Her best wins have been on rain effected tracks – maybe she will struggle on a firm surface.

Takotsubo (10), trained by Rex Lipp in Toowoomba. and she races well on firm tracks. She gets that this weekend and Tegan Harrison is in the saddle. Whilst on Tegan – I am very disappointed to find a Grafton born and raised girl has gone to the dark side – and supports Queensland in State of Origin – SHAME – SHAME – SHAME!

Polemic (11) is ridden by a true Queenslander - Jake Bayliss - and trained by a fine NSW trainer – Stephen Lee - at Ballina.

This gelding is at his fourth run into this preparation and I think he may be ready to show up here this weekend. Last start he peaked on his run at the 100 metres over the mile – this weekend back to 1500 metres maybe he will be ready to win this race. Jake has settled in Brisbane and rode a winner last weekend – maybe we should follow him.

Galtero (6) from Gollan Racing may be a rough hope with the 2018/19 champion Brisbane apprentice Baylee Nothdurft aboard.

Selections: 19-13-10-11 rough chances 6 & 18

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

This is a rough race – you could pick 7 here and still miss the winner. If you have some spare coin – maybe take the field in your Quaddies and Trebles.

Southern Lad (13) is another John O’Shea runner in Brisbane this weekend to be ridden by Ryan Maloney. He has some solid form on wet tracks. Last start over 1200 metres on a heavy track he ran some great sectionals in finishing off the race. He is fourth up this start.

Steven O’Dea trains So Spirited (8) who comes off an 11 week freshen up. He won a recent barrier trial two weeks ago and I think drawn in barrier 1 will get the run of the race. With the genuine speed in the race he will be well suited and will come home late. Ronnie Stewart is in the saddle - $21 each way.

Freddie Fox Trot (3) was a great third in the Grafton Ramornie. That race normally has some solid form coming out of it – he could be the runner to get on after his run. Baylee Nothdurft has been booked for the ride and his claim will come in handy.

Bring It Home Pop (10) has been racing in Sydney on heavy tracks. I think that back on top of the ground he could show some improvement. He has not won for 87 weeks – that is a long time between drinks.

Let’s look at the rough chances – Snipstream (7) who ran well a fortnight ago at Doomben. Crafty Cop (11) thrived on the bog heavy track last start – led all the way and was never in any danger. Can he hold that form on a firm track?

Now for the emergencies – let’s hope they get a start as they could both perform well. New Horizons (15) is trained by Chris and John Meagher who have trained winners each weekend for a few weeks now. Their horses are flying – Tegan Harrison stays aboard. Coral Bay (18) is trained by Stuart Kendrick – second up this weekend where he has won twice in three efforts. He may be a knockout chance at $61.

Selections: 8-13-3-10 rough chances 7,11,15,18

*************************************************************************************************

Race 9

A tough way to end the day.

Boomtown Lass (3) won well for the Robert Heathcote and Chris Anderson team a fortnight ago. She was well backed thereand she got the chocolates with a dominant performance. This weekend she goes up in weight and has drawn wide so may need some luck from the wide barrier.

The stable mate is Epic Girl (14) who is on a quick seven day back up. Last weekend she ran on well late over the 1000 metres – stepping up to 1200 metres may suit her.

Churning (7) won last start as well and has the blinkers applied for this run for Edmonds Racing team. She has been consistent of late and may put two wins together this week.

Rock Beat (6) is the runner I fear the most in the race. He likes this Eagle Farm track and last start got too far back on a day where they really were not making much ground. That was his first run for a month, and I think he will strip fitter for that effort and around $17 looks a great each way bet.

The David Vandyke runner Hold The Line (11) has been well supported in the markets since they have opened – keep your eye on this one.

Selections: 3-7-6-14 rough chance 11
