TONY AND MADDY SEARS APPLY FOR THOROUGHBRED TRAINING PARTNERSHIP LICENSE

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, July 2, 2019

The Tony Sears stable, who rattled home two winners at Toowoomba on Sunday, is one of four stables who could suddenly find themselves in the close fought contest for the Toowoomba training premiership over this final month of the season … should Racing Queensland officially follow the lead of Racing Victoria and make disqualified persons ineligible to win a premiership*.

But that wasn’t what has the Sears stable excited at the moment.

Tony and his daughter Maddy have completed the relevant forms and have submitted their application to Racing Queensland to become a training partnership.

"We are pretty excited about that,” said Sears. “Maddy does all of the right things and she’ll be great. We are just hoping to get the application approved and then I can sit back and take it easy.”

Maddy Sears was already fine tuning her media skills on Sunday taking on the Sky Channel winning trainer interviews like an old pro after Dazzling Red and Alloraine had landed the stable double.

So, we had to ask … if it comes down to a decision whether a horse should run 1400m or 1600m, who is going to win the argument?

“We’ll see. There will be a lot of discussion,” said Maddy.

“I will,” said Tony.

HRO wishes the upcoming partnership well in all of their future endeavours.

*If Racing Queensland were to officially follow the lead of Racing Victoria and make disqualified persons ineligible to win a premiership it would blow the Toowoomba Trainer’s Premiership chase wide open.

At this time Ben Currie, who is currently disqualified, heads that ladder with 76 winners but, if his name was to be erased from the Premiership race, Matt Kropp (20 winners), Tony Sears and Lindsay Hatch (17 winners each) and Michael Nolen (15 winners) will all be in touching distance of the Premiership.

Currie also currently leads the table for most winners trained in Queensland for the current season.

For the record this was the Racing Victoria verdict on the matter. They made this announcement last Friday, the terms of which come into immediate effect:

1. A licensed or registered person is ineligible to win any premiership, medal, or award in Victoria for any racing year if that person: a) engages in conduct that results in a disqualification or warning off from racing for any period of time; or b) serves any period of a disqualification or warning off, regardless of when the offending conduct occurred; or c) engages in conduct that results in a suspension of their licence or registration (or any privilege attached to their licence or registration) for a period of two months or more.

2. RV also retains full discretion to revoke any premiership, medal or award which has been won for any particular racing year if the winning person: a) is subsequently deemed to be ineligible pursuant to clause 1; or b) has otherwise, in the opinion of RV, conducted themselves in a manner which has undermined the integrity, reputation or public image of racing.
