RON QUINTON DELIGHTED WITH HIS QUALITY COLT. DAMIEN LANE CONTINUES HIS FINE RUN OF FORM

By Scott Gooley | Wednesday, February 6, 2019

SUNNY DAYS AHEAD FOR QUINTON JUVENILE

He already has four Golden Slippers to his name but could Ron Quinton add a fifth and his first as a trainer?

Quinton took the wraps off Sun Patch at Kensington today with spectacular results. A son of Exceed And Excel, Sun Patch was an $800 000 purchase at the Easter Yearling Sale last year.

“I don’t often get opportunities to train these sort of colts … he’s a quality horse,” Quinton said after the win.

‘Quality’ was just one of the superlatives commentators and spectators were using after watching Sun Patch come from an improbable position at the 200m mark, to flash home along the fence and record a half-length win.

“We’ll give him two weeks … three weeks, to get over today and then he’ll probably find himself in a stakes race to test him out.

“He’s not entered in the Golden Slipper. That won’t be a problem.”

“The race is still a long way away and if he’s good enough, I’m sure he’ll be there.”

PUNTERS FOLLOWING THE PROFITABLE LANE WAY

Jockey Damien Lane is in fine form ahead of Saturday’s Caulfield day of Group racing, landing a winning double at today’s Sandown meeting.

Lane, who bagged a winning treble at last weekend’s Caulfield meeting aboard three well-backed commodities (Naantali, Tin Hat, Loving Gaby), steered I Know That ($5.5) and Age Of Chivalry ($2.6) home taking his monthly tally to five wins from sixteen starts … with five further placings for good measure.

Among a solid book of rides this weekend Lane is on Nature Strip, the odds-on favourite for the Rubiton Stakes, and Land Of Plenty, who sits on the second line of betting behind Kementari in the G1 CF Orr Stakes.

Lane and Land Of Plenty have formed a formidable partnership in the last 12 months, with the pair taking out the G1 Toorak Handicap, the R A Lee Stakes in Adelaide and they finishes a close up third (a head back) behind Jungle Cat in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke.
