WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 15, 2018

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, September 13, 2018

Doomben this week and the BRC has proclaimed it “Country Music Weekend” with a massive program scheduled commencing with the Rodeo from 5.30pm on Friday at the track!

The track is rated “GOOD” (Thursday afternoon) and the rail will be 2 metres out the entire course this Saturday. The meeting has some small and challenging fields – whilst some fields have many chances. To be honest I like my chances of backing some winners at Randwick and Flemington this weekend – so be sure to review those tips at the bottom of the blog!

WINNO will be back at the track this weekend – however, Con Searle leading Brisbane bookmaker has run away to Western Australia to hang out with “pansies” and “weeping willies” – sorry “weeping willows”. He has gone to look at the wonderful natural flora out in Western Australia. Have a great time mate.

Josh Fleming is back from Birdsville – so I had better round him up in our tipping competition! Broncos are gone – As I tipped last weekend (St George $3.70) – so there is no more Queensland teams left in the NRL for 2018 and, finally, a shout out and congratulations to Claire “Clarence” – “FAZ” Farrow for completing her Early Childhood Educator qualification on Thursday! She now can legally educate and tame Mitchell Speers!

Time to review the meeting – real brief this weekend!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Small field – bet with caution.

Thunderous Strike (3) from the Matthew Dunn stables - for mine - to win the first race with Ryan Maloney aboard. He will lead and should be difficult to run down.

We could see a unique double for the Dunn stables as I think he can win the first race at Randwick as well with Lifesaver (4).

Baccarat Baby (1) and Michael “Muppy” Hellyer looks this logical danger.

Selections: 3-1-5-6

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 2

One of these lottery distance races.

Raqeeq (4) – I cannot even pronounce this Chris Waller runner – who debuts in Queensland after some consistent performances in Sydney. Jeff Lloyd takes the ride and he does have a great record in distance races and does sum them up well most weeks.

Sir Barnabus (8) keeps running places. He is down in the weights and may prove to be the testing material here.

Selections: 4-8-2-7

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Freddie Fox Trot (8) is a horse I have always had an opinion of. He is trained by Les Kelly and Ryan Plumb (the King of the Gold Coast last season) takes the ride here. Ryan has ridden him for 3 out of his 4 career starts. He looks a nice chance first up despite no official barrier trial form.

The Mechanic (6) from the David Vandyke stables may put a spanner in the works (sorry for the pun). Jeff Lloyd has been aboard for 2 wins on him recently. He faces his biggest test of his career in Saturday grade.

Junglized (3) won at Canterbury last start. He led on that occasion and normally races on the speed – he will be hard to toss here.

Selections: 8-6-3-4

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

This race has an even bunch.

I don’t think you can go past the recent efforts of Tversky (5) who just keeps winning! Dale Smith is aboard again here after completing a hat trick of wins aboard him two weeks ago at the Sunshine Coast. He is looking for 4 wins in a row!

Niccanova (2) gets into the race nicely with the claim for apprentice Michael Murphy – he could show up at nice odds.

The one I have a massive watch on is the Tony Gollan trained Raido (3). This runner has a habit of sitting off the speed in the races and flying home late and winning at a massive price. He gets those conditions this weekend he is a $20 outsider. Watch out for him here!

Selections: 5-2-7-3

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Class 3 Plate race – big field and lots of chances!

I have gone right down the bottom of the page for my tips.

I like the Robert Heathcote trained Stella Victoria (14) who is second up this weekend after a good win when resuming at Ipswich. She is a quality mare and she always races well fresh. Jeff Lloyd remains aboard here as well.

David Vandyke trains Miss Quaintly (15) and the stable has a nice opinion of this filly. I think that she will improve on the run she produces this weekend – so keep your eye on her for next start. I still expect her to be competitive in this field.

Umberto (6) from the Tony Gollan team has drawn badly in barrier 15. He will get back and make his run late.

Francisca (9) is trained by Steven O’Dea and won here two starts ago. She has drawn wide as well – but her recent efforts have been very consistent. She should acquit herself well here.

Selections: 14-15-6-9

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie.

A No Metro Win race over the 1050 metres – anything can happen here!

Goldfinch (9) is trained in Sydney by Steven Englebrecht and he has brought Deanne Panya to Doomben to partner this mare first up. She has won two recent trials at Warwick Farm and has drawn well in barrier 3. I expect her to lead and be hard to run down – but watch out for the local chances who will probably be sitting off the pace and storming home late.

Bold Xavvi (5) is one of those runners that will sit in behind this leader. Ryan Wiggins is aboard here and he has been riding well. He rode a winner at Rockhampton on Thursday and I expect him to be finishing this race off nicely in the final 100 metres.

Pedway (12) is trained by Kelly Schweida and debuts in Brisbane after two solid efforts in Sydney. He is drawn terribly in barrier 18 – Jimmy Orman will need his GPS from out there. However, I do think the 1050 metres will suit him.

Selections: 9-5-12-7

******************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The mile race for the program – and to be fair it has attracted a pretty good field. I expect to see several runners backed here so if you like something you are probably going to get some good value!

The two early favourites are Order Again (3) and Prioritise (6).

They met last start a fortnight ago at the Sunshine Coast when Prioritise (6) was ridden a treat by Jackson Murphy and just was too nippy for Order Again (3) who stormed home late. On that occasion I think the weight stopped the Brian Smith trained Order Again (3). This weekend they meet with similar weights – will the result be the same?

Show A Star (1) is trained in Sydney by Bjorn Baker and he has been carrying monster weights in Sydney in recent starts - getting out in front and setting the pace before getting swamped close to the line. I think that he may try and set the pace this weekend and with Jeff Lloyd dictating the speed and terms of the race things may go in his favour!

Selections: 1-6-3-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Toby Edmonds has some runners late in the program who look like they will be competitive.

We start here with Reach For Heaven (8) who was beaten by Looks Like Elvis a month ago on his home track at the Gold Coast. I think he gets his chance to break through for his maiden win in Queensland this weekend.

Courtza King (2) just keeps turning up each week. Brad Stewart always seems to get the best out of this Gollan trained gelding. Despite being a seven-year-old he loves this Doomben track and always runs a race!

Apoloboom (1), trained by Ben Currie, won the Dalby Cup last start. He gets a nice weight relief for Taylor Marshall’s claim and he should find a hole here.

Most Exalted (5) is trained by Mack Griffith in NSW. There has been some serious early support for this runner. He has been backed from $17 to $10 in some early markets. He does have a habit of setting a betting plunge on his runners first up – especially in Brisbane – do not underestimate this one.

Selections: 8-2-5-4 rough chance 1

****************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race of the day – I hope you are in front as it is a difficult assignment!

Cedarwood (4) from the Chris Waller stables on the Gold Coast has drawn barrier 15 and will need some luck from out there. I am hoping that Jag Guthmann-Chester can find a spot and get him settled before setting him alight in the final 200 metres.

They will be stretched right across the track in this last race – David Fowler and Josh Fleming will have their work cut out for them I reckon!

Foxy Affair (7) is another Robert Heathcote runner who has been working nicely through his grades. He posted a win last start at Ipswich in a midweek race. I expect him to make the transition to Saturday grade – jockey Matthew McGillivray stays aboard as well.

Toby Edmonds could win the last two races on the program. He has Madam Shazam (8) here. She has won her past three starts and Ryan Maloney is aboard looking for his first victory on the mare.

Tedder Avenue (12) is trained by Kevin Kemp in Toowoomba. She won last start at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres when ridden just off the speed and then peeling out and putting them to the sword. I don’t think the dropping back in distance will be any trouble – she may cause an upset in the last race.

Selections: 7-8-12-4 rough chance 18
