By Darren Winningham with Nick Hahn | Wednesday, June 20, 2018

SIXTY SECONDS WITH WINNO

This guy is one of the nice guys of racing who, like all strappers, shows love affection for his horses.

He has a special affinity with one at his current stable at Toowoomba – read on and find out what horse I am talking about!

He works for Michael Nolan and has worked with the Peter Moody team and strapped a Group 1 winner!

This is NICK HAHN.

*****************************************************************************************************
Do you have a nickname?

“Noodle” a family name and “BJ” – Michael Nolan gave it to me – there was a TV show ages ago “BJ and the Bear”!

Where do you work

I am stable foreman for Michael Nolan at Toowoomba.

What kind of car do you drive?

A Mazda BT 50 and it is silver!

Why have you got such a large vehicle? (I will try and keep it clean here)?

I can tow the horse trailer at work and you can think what you want WINNO!

How long have you been working with horses?

Since I was 13.

Have you always been based in Toowoomba?

No. I spent four years in Melbourne with Peter Moody.

What was your favourite horse at Peter Moody’s stables?

Dissident. I strapped him as well. It won a couple of Group 1 races – a pretty good horse.

What is your favourite horse at Michael Nolan’s stables?

JUMBO – Jumbo Prince.

So why JUMBO?

He is tough and I have spent most of his career with him.

Who do you rate as a jockey?

Regan Bayliss.

Why Regan Bayliss?

He is an up and coming jockey and I was with him at Peter Moody’s stables. He is a great kid and he has worked hard to get where he is.

What about a local jockey?

Ronnie Stewart.

Why?

He is a great rider and he can position them anywhere. He probably doesn’t get the opportunities that he deserves.

Fondest memory working for Peter Moody?

First Group 1 winner with Dissident in the Memsie at Caulfield in 2014.

Fondest memory working for Michael Nolan?

Winning our home town 2017 Weetwood (Listed) with Jumbo Prince when Luke Tarrant rode him.

Best thing you like about your work?

The horses to start with. But also, the people you meet – a lot of different owners come through the stable and they all come from different walks of life.

What do you do when you cannot sleep?

Normally scroll through Facebook.

Jockeys start early in the morning. What time does Nick get up to start work?

Up here with Michael we start at 4.30am each morning.

How do you prefer to be woken up in the morning? (Well we all know the answer to that … WINNO reminds Mr Hahn that this blog is”G” rated).

Normally my alarm then – from my iPhone.

Do you have a special tune on it?

No mate – it is just a boring alarm.

Name a memorable day as a Strapper?

The 2013 Melbourne Cup with Ibicenco trained by Peter Moody and ridden by Luke Nolen.

How did it go?

Well not that great – finished around 16th but it was a $61 chance.

What are you always late for?

I am never late! (Oh, PLEASE says WINNO). I am always punctual.

If you could change careers tomorrow what would you do?

It would be definitely something animal based. At school I wanted to be a zoo keeper – but that require too many brains. (Wow – that is selling yourself short Nick)! No WINNO I am just being honest!

What is your favourite music?

R & B.

What is your favourite musician?

PINK. (WINNO just rolled his eyes)! I love TRUE LOVE … the song she sings!

What is the most embarrassing song on your phone?

Brittany Spears – Kiss Me Baby One More Time.

What is your favourite gadget?

My phone.

What would you choose as your last meal?

Chicken Parmy! Salad - chips & gravy! (Wow you and Joshua Unwin have something in common – well nearly)!

Name one person who you want to have dinner with?

Prince Harry or Prince William – I am a bit of a royalist.

Why
If either of them wanted to jump the fence I am available!

Name one thing you could not live without?

It would probably be my phone!

What is your greatest fear?

I hate heights.

So you would never do parachuting?

No – never. I did a canyon swing in New Zealand with a friend and that was it for me.

When is your birthday?

Why WINNO? Being polite – it is the 7th August. (Okay – we are going parachuting – my shout)! No, WE ARE NOT! (I sense that is a definite NO punters)!

Name one of your favourite places?

Moreton Island – I just recently had a holiday there.

Where else have you visited on holiday

I went to New Zealand – I did a Contiki Tour.

NRL/AFL favourite team

NRL – Titans. AFL – I hate it!

State of Origin time – NSW or QLD?

QLD you idiot! (Another two headed smug supporter thinks WINNO).

Who do you talk on the phone the most to?

Michael Nolan.

What are you must grateful for everyday?

Life – life itself.

What landmark or item symbolises Australia?

The Boxing Kangaroo.

What do you like to put on a sandwich?

Ham – Cheese – Tomato and it must be toasted. Some salt and pepper on white bread and butter.

What toppings do you like on your pizza?

I love my PIZZAS! I like Meatlovers with BBQ sauce. Classic crust pizzas – from Dominos.

How do you define success?

Judgement from your peers - positive judgement.

Who is you man crush?

Prince Harry – love a good ginger!

Who is your girl crush?

PINK.

Tell us something that may surprise us about you?

I watch a lot of war documentaries.

If you are down to your last $10 what would you spend it on?

A drink of Scotch.

You would only get one drink for $10?

That’s alright – it would be top shelf and straight no ice.

THANKS FOR SPENDING 60 SECONDS WITH WINNO!
