WINNO'S KILCOY KASH: SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2016

By Darren Winningham | Friday, December 2, 2016

Well I have packed my cameras and computer and set the GPS this weekend to head to the track that is dubbed the “Moonee Valley of the North” – the Kilcoy Race Club. This weekend is one of their handfuls of TAB meetings that are conducted across the year. It is called “Tattersalls Racing Club Kilcoy Christmas Cup” – a day where locals and people from around the area come to enjoy the wonderful facilities on track. With the first race scheduled for 12.23pm and $10 admission it is bound to be a great day out for punters and families. The schedule is for seven (7) gallop races, five (5) grass trot races and three (3) mini trot grass races. It is a grand day to attend.

Horses that have won at the track or who are ridden handy have a distinct advantage at this track. I have spoken with Con Searle, Chairman of the Kilcoy Race Club this afternoon – he was pleased to advise “we got 20mm of rain on the track on Wednesday – it has not affected the track in any way. We expect to be running on a Good 3 on Saturday”. In regards to patronage Searlesaid, “We have sold the trackside Pavilion out and we have had great support in pre race ticket sales.”

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

Ben Currie from Toowoomba has a few chances here. Beau Appo and Currie have been in devastating form over recent weeks at Toowoomba – will it continue here a Kilcoy this weekend? Appo rides Captain Leo (1) who has drawn wide in 12 and may need some luck from out there. Nozi Tomizawa is riding a first starter for the stable – The Captain’s Lady. Dunn Great (7) was a solid run last start at Sunshine Coast and raced on the speed – the filly looks like the one to beat here. Sister Patti (11) has drawn barrier 1 is trained by Les Ross and is to be ridden by Jordan Mallyon – again this filly should race handy looking at her last few starts. She may just be hard to run down if she can get around that tight turn into the home straight.

Selections: 7-11-1-3 rough chance 12

Race 2

Ponty (9) looks well placed here again from the Les Ross stables with Jordan Mallyon taking the ride. The gelding has never raced before at Kilcoy so this may be a slight disadvantage, however, he does race on the speed and should get a nice run from barrier 3. Big Green Pony (4) has a great record on the track with two runs for two wins. Last start at the Sunshine Coast it reared at the start and lost all chances of featuring in the finish. He could improve here if he gets a clean get away. Noor Dropper (3) is to be ridden by Stephanie Lacy and comes off an all the way win at Roma – Lacy does ride this track well – could be one to follow here as well.

Selections: 9-4-3-1

Race 3

I really don’t like this race. Quattro Fantastico (2) comes off a nice win at Ipswich last start. The top weight Double Dollars (1) is second up here and is trained by Ducky Baker – probably the only other one with a chance here. Claragh (7) is trained at Bundaberg and makes the long trip south. The mare comes off a nice win at Rockhampton where she led all the way maybe the same can be repeated here.

Selections: 2-1-6-7

Race 4

I am punting on one here to be ridden by Jarrod Woodhouse – Stage Lady (12) who returns to the track after an eight month spell. In her only run she ran a great race at Ipswich. If she is forward enough she will be hard to beat here. Danysus (3) is on a quick back up after a poor run at Ipswich around eight days ago – maybe the gelding has done well since and the 800m at Kilcoy may suit. Maxwell (4) is second up here for the Stuart Kendrick stables at the Sunshine Coast – again a lightly raced three year old and looks one with some ability.

Selections: 12-4-3 rough chances 10 & 11

Race 5 Carlton-Mid Cannonball Series Final 2016

Well the Chairman of Kilcoy Race Club – Mr Con Searle must have thought he has had no luck – drawing the outside barrier – barrier 12 over the 800m for this race. He has engaged Nozi Tomizawa to ride his charge Zouzoukakia (5) and he will need some luck from out there – but on recent form with any luck he may be right in the finish. Jarrod Woodhouse is looking for a feature race win on Sassy Tycoon (1) after riding the mare her last two starts to victory at Ipswich and Gold Coast. She loves to lead and has drawn barrier 8 this weekend. This could give Jarrod a race to race double! The other one that could be hard to toss here is Life’s Like That trained by Greg Cornish at Beaudesert and to be ridden by Stephanie Lacy this weekend. The gelding has drawn well in barrier 3 and was defeated last start by Zouzoukakia at Ipswich by 1.5 lengths. This is a great race with some serious speed in it – maybe there is an opportunity for one to settle off the speed and make a late run.

Selections: 1-5-4-3

Race 6 Tattersall’s Racing Club – Kilcoy Christmas Club

I am tipping Heart Stealer (6) here with promising apprentice Chelsea Jokic aboard this weekend. He always races handy and I think that the 1900m here should be the right distance. The Golden Pig (3) is another one that likes to lead – if the gelding is left alone in front he may prove the winner here. The top weight Elegies (1) is down in class and up in weight – but trained by Rod Hilton at Texas and to be ridden by Gary Geran could get a nice run off the pace and make a late charge late along the rail.

Selections: 6-3-1-5

Race 7

Bobby Be Good (2) looks well placed here after some consistent runs at the Sunshine Coast. He has had two starts here at the track for not a placing – that may be the only concern. Heavenly Mum (5) is trained by the astute Lindsay Hatch team at Toowoomba . She is a lightly raced four year old mare that has been transferred from Sydney to the Hatch stables – she may just have some ability – this is her second run for the Hatch team. Rocking My World (8) had a chequered run last start at the Sunshine Coast – jockey Geoffrey Goold is a good lead here for his chances.

Selections: 7-8-2-5 rough chance 10

Jockey Challenge

This week it is a tough week – there are a lot of horses that have no jockeys declared at the moment – how about for now we say it looks like a good battle between Jordan Mallyon and Jarrod Woodhouse – with Chelsea Jokic a rough chance.
