WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM NOVEMBER 19

By Darren Winningham | Friday, November 18, 2016

Back to Eagle Farm this week – they are forecasting showers over Thursday and Friday but it looks like we should be racing on a Good track.

Last week we were washed out with a storm hitting the Doomben track late in the day – shame as I was just warming up and looking good in the treble!

This week saw Frespanol return to the Sunshine Coast after the nasty accident earlier in the year in the Gollan stable horse truck. He came out and won at $17 – be sure to follow this horse in his next few runs – he is a nice type.

The news of the week is James McDonald being charged by Racing NSW stewards for allegedly having an interest in a bet on a horse he rode in a race. McDonald stood himself down pending the outcome of the investigation.

Whilst this investigation are still on-going, I would hope that he is cleared as soon as possible and returns to the saddle – he is a wonderful talent and would be missed from racing not only in Australia but internationally.

There is a nine race program this week – so let’s hop into the form and see if we can find some Winno’s Winners! NB *As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

Race 1

This does not look a real good race to start the day. Emerald City (1) has been in tremendous form over recent weeks and is looking for four wins in a row. I think he is a good thing – but after his last win at Doomben David Vandyke did toy with the idea of sending him out for a spell. He must have shown something to keep him in work and give him another start this preparation. The entry fee alone to Eagle Farm is worth it if the gelding salutes again because of the winning reaction of the strapper of this horse – Erika Schmid - who travels from Sydney to strap the horse here each start. Her raw emotion and passion when he wins needs to be seen to be believed – it is truly emotional and inspirational. It is awesome to come to the races and see such elation from strappers and owners when their charges salute! The only danger I can see here is the Rob Heathcote trained Kaiser Franz (3) who has been working up to the 2200m of this week’s race.

Selections: 1-3-5-7

Race 2

Wow – a large field of two year olds here with not much exposed form. Catalina Miss (5) was sent out last start at $101 and Ryan Wiggins led them easily and only was beaten in the last bound in a photo. Wiggo had a nasty fall at the Sunshine Coast on the Wednesday mammoth thirteen race program. He was extremely lucky and appears to have escaped any serious injury other than just some bumps and bruises – I have read on social media he hopes to be fit to ride on Saturday on the program! There has been some early money for the Steve O’Dea trained You Make Me Smile (4) currently around the $4.60 mark at the moment.

I have been alerted by my Gold Coast spies of one that trialled well recently, the David Kelly trained Pins for Arrows (10) – apparently one with some ability that may need watching. Sista Act (11) is trained by Liam Birchley and has the services of Jeff Lloyd – probably should find somewhere for this one in my tips. I see that the Healey partnership of father and son (Billy and Dale) have Tapa (12) engaged. They were successful the other week with a nice two year old first up – maybe one to watch here as well at some nice odds. It is an open race so as usual keep your eye on the markets and any betting moves that might help find the winner! May be worth going wide.

Selections: 5-4-11-12 rough chance 10

Race 3

A 1000m scamper this race for three year olds. Sundance (1) is a promising gelding trained by Toby Edmonds. He was unlucky over the Winter Carnival after bursting onto the scene. The only issue I have here is the 59 kilograms he has to carry but I am hoping that the weight won’t stop him. Sir Donald (4) is lightly raced. Trained by Michael Nolan he has been impressive in his recent runs - winning last start at Ipswich. He steps up to Saturday grade this weekend and has the services of inform Jeff Lloyd. I do recall tipping Starcourt (11) recently from the father and son stable of Bryan and Daniel Guy. He resumed with a nice second at Doomben at nice odds – eventually officially starting at $17. Down in the weights here and drawn nicely, he may be the one to knock over the more favoured runners. There has been some early money for Sir Donald ($4 to $3.60) and Starcourt ($7.50 to $6).

Selections: 1-4-11-6

Race 4

This is a real nice race with some good types here. Nicconi Leggera (1) from the Chris Munce yard really does excel here over the 1000m at Eagle Farm. Tiffani Brooker takes the ride this week and her 3 kilogram claim will be beneficial. Tiyatrolani (3) was taken on in front last time and just peaked on her run. Jim Byrne takes the reins this week – maybe look for some different riding tactics and an improved run. Rare Occurrence (2) trained by Stuart Kendrick at the Sunshine Coast was super consistent over the Brisbane Winter Carnival and resumes this week with Damian Brown on board. I think the more speed on in front the harder this filly will come home late in the race. She won her last start before the spell at Eagle Farm so I am confident she will be there about at the finish. Ice Frost (7) is a lightly raced filly trained by Darlene Duryea who has won her last two starts convincingly at Ipswich. She is stepping up in grade here and looks a nice each way chance. Brooke Ainsworth takes the ride – a very talented apprentice with a three kilogram claim. She has ridden the horse to both victories and will ensure she gets every chance this weekend.

Selections: 2-1-7-3

Race 5

I think the run of Brooklyn Storm (6) the other week at Doomben from barrier 18 was full of merit and if the gelding can handle the Eagle Farm surface I think it is a special this week. Perfect Dare (5) with Matthew Dunn and Jim Byrne are the early favourites for the race at $4.80. The run of the gelding first up at Rosehill was full of merit and he had some amazing form over the Winter Carnival. It will be hard to beat here from a good barrier. In His Stride (7) turned in a solid performance last start behind Primal Flight here – I am sure it will be improved by that run. I did put a watch on Forgotten Years (4) first up from a spell when it resumed at Eagle Farm with a massive 60.5kgs. It ran third and although has not got the best second up record – I think it may be one to fill the exotic bets, placings at odds.

Selections: 6-5-7-4 rough chance 10

Race 6

Class 3 race again this week over 1200 metres – they keep getting tougher each week. I see that apprentice Jordan Childs has made the trip to Brisbane this week to partner the stallion raced by Power Thoroughbreds – Reneged. I was present at Grafton earlier in the year when he destroyed a good quality field to win the 2016 Grafton Guineas with Tye Angland aboard. This win came on the back of some unlucky runs over the Brisbane Winter Carnival. I am going to put him on top at around the $10 mark, although he has drawn wide and will probably get back I think there is some serious speed in this race that should suit him. Shotacross the Bow (8) is a gelding resuming here as well – his form in the Carnival was also full of merit without much success.

Sarajevo (12) is trained now at Newcastle by Kris Lees and normally his horses perform well when they make the trip north to Brisbane. He has been well backed in early markets from $7 to $5. My Girl Hayley (16) was impressive first up at Doomben over the 1110m with apprentice Lani Fancourt taking the mare to the lead on that occasion and giving nothing else a hope in catching her. Lani retains the ride this week but she will need all her skills to get across from barrier 15 and take up the running here. Fiery Heights (3) I thought was a super run last start at Doomben when defeated by My Girl Hayley – he has drawn wide again here but I think he will be in the placings somewhere when the judge calls a halt to the race.

Selections: 6-8-3-12 rough chance 16

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The 2016 Keith Noud Quality – this race is normally a good reference point for races to be run over the summer months here in Brisbane. It a small but very even field with some good horses resuming. There are a couple here that may want the lead – this could be a race that breaks some records if the track remains a good surface. I am going to tip one here at $20 – Rocket to Glory (2) for me is taken to win here and give Lani Fancourt a massive thrill after returning from injury. The gelding returned from a twelve month break and ran a nice race at Doomben after leading with 60.5 kilograms. He has over $800,000 in prize money and has a tremendous second up record with three wins and a second from seven starts. Some people may say I am silly but I think Lani may not have to lead here and with the speed on from other horses – she may be able to peel around the heels late and storm home to win.

Primal Flight (7) was great last start and really does love the Eagle Farm circuit – another one at good odds here at around $12. Jimmy Orman will need to come up with some unique tactics to ensure it gets the run of the race. There are so many leaders here – what will Jimmy do? Most Important (9) ran a slashing time of 1.08.27 when he won at Doomben. I am not sure whether the gelding goes as good here – but with 54 kilograms on his back I am sure he will be flying late at the finish. The other horse that goes down in the weights is Sony Legend (6). He will enjoy the speed on and jockey Paul Hammersley will probably pull him wide at the 200metres to make his run at the horses in front – this horse does have a genuine powerful finish and could blow them all out late. This is a great race with many chances. Too Good To Refuse (8) got a check at the start last run – then there is Coolring (3) up from the Bjorn Baker stables in Sydney – but you cannot put them all in! Let’s hope for a decent trifecta and a first four with my selections.

Selections: 2-7-9-6 rough chance 8

*************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Another tough race here with many chances. Better Land (9) meets Brotherly Secret (3) better at the weights for a narrow defeat last start at Doomben. I tipped Brotherly Secret that weekend stating that I don’t think it handles the Eagle Farm track. Better Land won first up here and I am happy to say this is my second special on the program! Jim Byrne comes off a short spell after a recent holiday to Bali and hopefully he can get the Toby Edmonds trained stallion home for us here! Mr Jetset (6) is another who likes the Eagle Farm track. He pulled up sore last start I think will improve here this weekend. Brettan always runs well fresh and normally at large odds – don’t leave him out. Then there is Who’s Your Daddy (16) from the John Wallace stables on the Gold Coast who has been quietly working through the grades in midweek company – again another one at reasonable odds looking for four wins in a row that could find a place here.

Selections: 9-6-3-10 rough chance 16

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race of the day! I hope you all have some cash in your pockets by now and can just stand back and watch them – it is a tough assignment! I am tipping the father and son team of Peter and Will Hulbert to win the final race with Saga Miss (16). She is coming back in distance from the 1800 metres of her last win but I think with some genuine speed up front she will be coming home late with Nathan Day in the saddle. Friendly Dragon (19) won two starts ago here at massive odd and ran well last start here – the gelding has never raced over the 1600m but I think apprentice Rhiannon Payne will give him every chance here.

L’Entrecote (2) ran super last weekend at Doomben before the races were washed out. He likes the track as well and normally races well when backed up quickly – Damian Browne retains the ride. Crooked Stick (8) owned and bred by Gerry Harvey of Harvey Norman fame is another one at some odds that may bother the judge at the end of the race. Then you have Lord Coconuts (10) and Privlaka (11) both with good form at Eagle Farm and who have both been racing consistently. A tough race here – really anything can happen. Maybe take the field in your Quaddies and a $70 winner may sneak in and knock them all out! Lord Coconuts has been well backed from $7.50 to $5.50 in the early markets.

Selections:16-2-8-19 rough chances 10 & 11
