MY CALL: EAGLE FARM TRACK HAS TURNED THE CORNER

By David Fowler | Tuesday, September 6, 2016

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

The Eagle Farm track has clearly turned the corner.

No one could be dissatisfied with the racing last weekend.

It was a shame 15mm of rain fell the night before yet we saw a heavy to soft upgrade at the midway point of the meeting.

Yet even allowing for the overnight downpour, scouting wide was non-existent and kickback was minimal.

Further remedial work is now underway and the rail will be in the six metre position on Saturday week.

And this coincides with the weather getting warmer by the day.

Alas, the twitter whingers will have to find a new topic to direct their venom towards.

There's plenty of things I don't like about social media, twitter particularly.

It always amazes me why media types also establish twitter accounts to tell us what they had for breakfast, for example.

Haven't they got enough say in the marketplace without this useless drivel.

On balance, everyone is entitled to an opinion but there is one breed that make my skin crawl.

And, let me say, this type are just as prevalent in racing matters on twitter.

The ones who are too gutless to put their hands up but retweet an opinion they secretly agree with.

Of course, they have the disclaimer that retweets are not necessarily their opinions.

Absolute cowards. Get a spine I say.

On a brighter front, we can look forward to some local talent interstate on the weekend.

Sold For Song will give Jimmy Orman his first Sydney ride in the Sheraco at Rosehill.

She is brilliant finisher and, hopefully, has taken another step forward mentally and physically since her impressive Winter Campaign.

John Zielke will launch his spring raid at Flemington with early season three-year-olds Happy Event and Dreams A Plenty.

And there are good reports on their Cranbourne jumpouts on Monday morning.

Is excluding on track bookies prices from the transmitted fluctuations a good idea?

I don't think so but it seems likely to happen.

More on this next week.

The trial on 30 minute gaps at midweek races was supposed to end last month.

Yet those time intervals are locked in for Doomben tomorrow.

Is it now the norm?

Is a SE Queensland high profile trainer involved in a prohibited substance inquiry today?

**************************************************************************************************

Plenty of questions to be answered in next week’s column.

Looking forward to broadcasting the action at the Cairns Amateurs Carnival this weekend.
