WINNO'S WINNERS - DOOMBEN, AUGUST 27

By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 26, 2016

The roads lead to Doomben this week. Looks likely to be a soft track with the rail in the true position.

Some of this week’s highlights would have to be the return of the super mare Winx last weekend – she was explosive and looks like she has come back ready to dominate the Spring races.

As you all know I was at the Kilcoy track last weekend and I am pleased to report that it was a wonderful day with a moving ceremony to remember the Australian Diggers from the Vietnam War – such an overwhelming atmosphere for the last post and the remembrance ceremony.

I am on the prowl for some interesting people in racing to do some interviews – jockeys, owners, trainers and just general punters and racegoers. If you are keen drop me a message on Facebook or contact the editor of HRO. I think everyone has a story to tell at some stage in their lives.

NB *As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

This is an interesting race. Bagus (1) has certainly got some class on this field and should be hard to beat first up. There is a roughie here that I have the eye on if it gets a start – Tyranny (16) – has trialled well and is drawn nicely here but faces a tough task against some seasoned horses. Ringo’s a Rockstar (7) has won two recent barrier trials getting ready for this run. The Ambassadore (8) is from the Gollan team and won well first up – it steps up here to Saturday grade. Mymancharles (6) is from the Steve Tregea stable and it won well first up at Doomben. He has drawn well here and may take the step into Saturday grade. Overall a tough race with many chances.

Selections: 6-8-7-1 rough chance to 16 if it gets a run.

Race 2

One Inch Punch (1) likes rain affected tracks and was storming home last start. It looked like he is looking for a mile. The Iliad (2) and Desert General (3) both have been racing in consistent form and they should be right in the finish. Bentles (7) led all the way last start and battled on well when narrowly beaten. Mysticism (12) was also only narrowly beaten by Sagoronne last start and remains down in the weights. Has a big chance.

Selections: 1-12-3-2 rough chance 7.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Angel Dancer (5) has been in solid form recently and does love the Doomben track. If the track is seriously rain affected Jopa (3) revels in the wet as does Flamboyer (2) who will be out in front for a long way here. Total Authority (6) put in a great run last start to win at Eagle Farm and may be able to string two wins together here.

Selections: 5-3-2-6.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Prompt Return (3) was impressive first up from a spell at the Gold Coast for new trainer Toby Edmonds. Morning Fog (11) is looking for a hat trick of wins here and does love wet tracks, she has drawn wide and this may pose a challenge for apprentice jockey Bridget Grylls. Frequendly (9) from the Les Ross stables, who has been having a good run of latem, goes well on the Doomben track. Hanwritten (19) from the Matthew Dunn stables at Murwillumbah has accepted for Rosehill Race 4 as well as this race – it could be a nice price if it runs in either race. It has had a recent barrier trial win at his home track bolting in on that occasion in a nice time.

Selections: 3-11-9-19 rough chance 14.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Panno Rosa (4) thrives on rain affected tracks – he narrowly ran down Brave Ali (3) last start and I think the result here maybe the same this week. It is mooted that Brave Ali is coming to the end of his racing career – and soon maybe retired. I suppose it would be fitting for the horse to go out a winner here! They are both coming back slightly in distance this week to the 2000 metres. La Spiaggia (7) has been performing well each start this preparation is probably not far away from a win. Meteorologist (7) loves the wet tracks – the heavier the better! It looks an even bunch here to start the Quadrella.

Selections: 4-3-9-7.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6

O’Reilly Cyrus (16) was a super run after being drawn wide and getting back last start at Eagle Farm – has drawn much better this week in barrier 6 and will be ridden by Jason Taylor. It is certain to get a good run here. Testability (13) was impressive last start at the Gold Coast for new trainer Ruth Cooper – Chris Dell rode the mare on that occasion. Man of His Word (5) drew barrier 20 last start and turned in a decent performance Monsieur Gustave (8) was astounding first up at the Sunshine Coast leading and dominating and winning by 9.3 lengths – trained by Darryl Hansen this may be one to watch here. It has been backed to the exclusion of all runners in early markets coming in from $5.50 to $2.90. Heroism (4) won well over the Grafton Carnival and was without luck last start at Doomben – may prove to be some good value here for your multiples.

Selections: 16-8-5-13 rough chance 4.

Race 7

This must be the toughest race on the program this week. There have been some early scratchings that probably mean most of the emergencies here will make the field. Saint Hugo (5) has drawn wide here but was impressive last start winning at the Gold Coast – jockey Luke Dittman has retained the ride and is coming off a short spell himself with a trip to the USA. Pepperano (13) resumed recently and ran strongly at Doomben just going down in a photo finish. It may have just needed the run that day and should strip fitter this week. Pienkna (14) resumed a few weeks ago and was soundly defeated by Hidden Pearl on that occasion – she has drawn well here in barrier 1 and Jim Byrne stays on the mare. Toby Edmonds has a great run of luck of late in the city with his starters. He has Queen Tara (15) and Western Belle (20), who is the fourth emergency nominated here along with Red Diamonds (4). His stable is flying and I think they are all chances in this field.

Selections: 13-15-14-20 rough chance 5.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Looks like a tough race to finish the day with $6 the field in the early markets. Some of the main chances here have drawn out on Nudgee Road in barriers 20 to 22. These are Sunny Victory (15), Oink (16) and Revaldor (17) and they will need some luck from out there. Hi I’m Back (5) is the horse I have settled on – the gelding has won its last two starts I think it will go on with it here. Land Office (11) has drawn well and is stepping up to Saturday grade. The lightly raced gelding could be one to watch in this field, especially with the claim for apprentice jockey Tiffani Brooker who takes the ride this weekend. Other chances are Sky Limit (13) and My Cousin Bossy (9) – they have won recently at Eagle Farm. My Cousin Bossy did look pretty good in winning its race – this week it has the services of Ryan Wiggins. Stella Ormbra (14) is another one that races well fresh, likes a wet track and has had two trials to get ready here. Trained by Kelly Schweida and has drawn well. May be one at a nice price to add some spice into the exotics.

Selections: 5-11-9-14 rough chances 13, 16 and 17.
