MY CALL: THE POWERFUL CASE FOR BUFFERING TO BE A QUEENSLAND HALL OF FAME INCLUSION THIS YEAR

By David Fowler | Tuesday, July 26, 2016

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Do you have to be retired or “brown bread” to be a Hall Of Fame inductee?

This argument will be front and centre in the immediate future because there is a powerful case for Buffering to be a Queensland Racing Hall Of Fame inclusion this year.

The Awards night is less than a month away and the drums are beating for the best sprinter Queensland has produced to be at least a nomination.

Yet some remain bogged down in the thinking that “he’ll get his turn one day”.

What a load of tosh! If he deserves to be in now, he deserves to be put in now, not down the track.

Why shouldn’t his owners experience another wonderful chapter in this already six year ride?

Leave it five years and some of them may not be here or not talking to each other.

RESOLUTION: “Buff” for the Hall Of Fame

Amazingly, an austerity move has produced a winning formula.

The metro share of Saturday prizemoney was shave by $20,000 by introducing a Plate for lower class horses.

Owners and trainers have jumped at the chance to put an up and comer in for good stakemoney compared to a midweek assignment.

The fields are well sized and offer plenty of value.

They are a welcome addition to the Saturday card.

When I warned of the potential QRIC shortcomings a month ago, I was a lone voice.

I wasn’t mischief making but had a genuine concern that some processes would be difficult to achieve.

Frustration with securing, and paying for, a stay of proceedings at QCAT is high on the list after a month of operations.

And the internal review process will clearly drag behind with only one person at the helm covering three codes across the state.

The sad part is that the nuts and bolts are part of legislation and cannot be altered in the short term.

QRIC is poised to pounce on big ticket items. Unfortunately, research should have illustrated we don’t have many of them.

John Zielke should send me a big humble pie to devour.

I scorned the form of the mid-season two-year-old races that he was regularly winning.

Yet he kept on winning ... and is still winning in the last week of the racing season.

Great training and great placement to have won 14 individual races.

And to be mentioned in the same breath as the Strong brothers in terms of juvenile success, is indeed a compliment.

GRAPEVINE

Will that be the last Tatts race meeting in July? We will see.

Does the thoroughbred chairman of stewards have an office at QRIC ? Surely, he would.
