Liam Birchley’s already glowing reputation in terms of producing competitive two-year-olds gained more ground when Crack The Whip ($4.75) lined his opposition in the Listed Dalrello Stakes at Toowoomba.

The son of Mossman was only having his third career start but he had put the writing on the wall for this winning performance when, in his first-up outing last time, he finished runner-up just 0.20 lengths behind the talented and more experienced Spot The Diff who completed a hat trick of wins in that race.

That second place result came over the 1100m trip at Doomben. Crack The Whip was better suited to this 1200m trip and, with the pace on from the break, the tempo also played into his hands.

It was in fact a suicidal pace set at the head of affairs by Happy Event ($7.50) and the $3 favourite Love Spy (See Stewards report extract).

Jim Byrne chased Love Spy out of the barriers from her wide draw and she had the speed to be able to cross to lead on the rail, but if Byrne thought he was going to dictate matters to his advantage from there he was mistaken as Happy Event chased up along his outside and the two horses then cut at each other leaving the main field ... which was being carried forward by Spot The Diff ... back six lengths adrift.

At that stage Crack Me up raced in fifth place, some seven to eight lengths off the duelling duo in front.

Love Spy’s race was run before the turn. Happy Event still kicked on bravely on straightening but by now real dangers were starting to emerge.

Spot The Diff, looking for that fourth successive win, quickly moved into contention but that effort was almost immediately covered by Crack Me Up who was travelling menacingly to Spot The Diff’s outside.

Crack Me Up duly went passed Spot The Diff and then had little trouble in reeling in the now tiring Happy Event and the Birchley charge then went to the line like a good thing, winning in style.

Spot The Diff’s winning run had come to an end but he was still clearly best of the rest while Sugarparma ($8) did enough late to claim third place after having to be steadied at the 350m.

Crack Me Up’s win gave jockey Jeff Lloyd back to back winners on the card having won the previous race on Brooklyn Storm.

TRAINER LIAM BIRCHLEY

“He is lightly raced. I’ve taken my time with him.

“I only had him in on debut at Doomben in December to satisfy myself that he was probably not a Magic Millions horse.

Although he didn’t get much of a crack that day, if you’ll pardon the pun, I could see he needed a big track and a bit of room and that he wasn’t going to be suited by going to the Gold Coast at that stage.

"I just thought, well I’ll wait and put him away for the winter.

In his first-up run at the start of April at Doomben (when he got within 0.20 lengths of Spot The Diff) he was probably sectionally dominant there, especially in second half of the race.

“You just hope that when you go in distance, as he did at Toowoomba, that factor remains similar.

“Admittedly he was helped a lot by the pace on Saturday. It really helped him out.

“He is a horse that’s got a terrific temperament. He’s got good scope and he is quite well bred ... so he does have a few strings to his bow in terms of thinking he’ll go on a bit.

“With only three runs behind his name you would think there is more progress to follow out of that.

“How far he will get ... I’m not sure. Jeff (Lloyd) seems to think he will get a mile. I think that is just something you have to assess as you go along. I think when he gets on a big track he will go a lot better.

“I’ll probably give him a bit of an ease up and then head for the Champagne Classic over 1200m. I think it is two weeks to the Sires after that and then two weeks to the T J Smith.

All being well we’ll follow that path.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT

Two Shoes – As B. Pengelly was to be overweight, N. Tomizawa was substituted as the rider of the horse. B. Pengelly was fined $200. Peking Road – Slow to begin. Momentarily forced to steady from the heels of Doumbek, which shifted in abruptly near the 950m. Momentarily placed in restricted room near the 750m. Emtevee Queen – Bumped at the 900m and became unbalanced for a short distance by another runner, and as a result raced wide for the remainder of the event. Sugarparma – Steadied to avoid heels and shifted outwards near the 350m. Endless Days – Had difficulty obtaining clear running for a considerable distance between the 200m and 100m. Love Spy – Weakened over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Happy Event – Jockey S. Bogenhuber was found guilty of a chare under AR135(b) in that from the 900m after obtaining a position outside Love Spy she failed to make sufficient effort to restrain her mount when it was reasonable and permissible to do so particularly given she had ridden aggressively in the early stages to obtain a position outside the lead. Further, from the 800m she allowed her mount to stride forward which resulted in Happy Event maintaining a fast tempo when it was reasonable and permissible to restrain and attempt to maintain a position outside Love Spy, and that her actions as particularised have, in the opinion of the stewards, resulted in Happy Event failing to obtain the best possible position. Jockey Bogenhuber was suspended from riding in races or a period of 2 months, to commence at midnight, 20 April and to expire midnight 20 June.
