SEVEN DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT): THE WEEKLY REVIEW (FEBRUARY 26 - MARCH 4) - PART B

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, March 5, 2014

HRO's news and commentary feature - SEVEN DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT) - provides a weekly review of racing activity, both on and off the track. Due to the on-going positive response this feature has received it has been expanded into two parts (A) & (B)

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACTS:

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT (Beaudesert Feb 14):
Stewards today concluded their inquiry into the reasons for SHORAIGH STAR receiving severe crowding resulting in B. Appo being dislodged near the 950m. Stewards today heard further evidence from the riders involved and Mr D. Bell, master of apprentice M. McKenzie, rider of RED HOT MOTHER.

Having considered all the evidence put forward on the day and further evidence tendered today, stewards found that shortly after the start the saddle on SAPPHIRE BELLE (B. El-Issa) shifted back slightly and then that horse was inclined to lay in in the early stages on to NATURAL SIGN. As a result of this, SOUL POWERED and SHORAIGH STAR then raced in restricted room until a point approaching the course proper. When SAPPHIRE BELLE endeavoured to be shifted out it was then awkwardly placed inside the heels of RED HOT MOTHER (M. McKenzie) and was unable to relieve the pressure to horses inside.

As a result of this general crowding as the horses came out of the chute and joined the course proper, SHORAIGH STAR, which was having its first race start, ran out of racing room and became badly crowded and struck the running rail, resulting in B. Appo being dislodged from SHORAIGH STAR. As stewards were unable to to determine that any one rider was fully responsible for the crowding, they took no further action. However, M. McKenzie, rider of RED HOT MOTHER, was told that the manner in which he shifted across when not properly clear was a contributing factor to the crowding that occurred to his inside.

FROM DOOMBEN (FEB 26):

Apprentice R. Ride was fined $400 for possessing and using a mobile phone in the jockeys' room.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the handling of KINGTANTES, in particular in the early stages of the home straight. After taking evidence from jockey D. Browne, the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed. A post race veterinary examination of KINGTANTES revealed a very unusual action behind. (Race 2). *At a subsequent hearing Browne was found guilty on a handling charge and was suspended for six weeks!

B. El-Issa, rider of FIVE O'CLOCK, was reprimanded for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m. (Race 4).

BOOMALICIOUS bled during the event. Connections were advised that BOOMALICIOUS would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months. (Race 5).

A post race veterinary examination of LULLABY LADY revealed it to have broken down in the near fore tendon. (Race 5).

A post race veterinary examination of ARISTON suffered a significant injury to its off fore tendon. (Race 6).

Stewards questioned trainer D. Forster in relation to the riding instructions on ROMANARMA, which settled in a forward position today which was in contrast to its most previous start. Miss Forster explained that there was no specific riding instructions, however advised stewards that ROMANARMA was dropping back in grade today and was able to race more forward.

She also advised stewards that her intention would be to step the horse up in distance and continue to ride it in a forward manner. The explanation was noted. (Race 7). *Jockey Michael Cahill received a six meeting suspension after pleading guilty to a charge of careless riding aboard ROMANARMA.

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (FEB 27):

Whilst parading in the mounting yard, SICIMONACHICKEN (D. Hayse) became cast on a running rail for a considerable time. The gelding was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and, acting on her advice, stewards ordered the late scratching of the gelding. (Race 3).

In the home straight KOKO CLANG (S. Evans) was inclined to hang out badly and shifted ground. Jockey Evans had difficulty riding the horse out and whilst attempting to pull the whip through to her left hand it became entangled and was dropped by Jockey Evans. (Race 6).

A Kitson was erroneously advertised as a 2kg claiming apprentice as the rider for CHEATIN' CHARLIE. Stewards established that Ms Kitson's apprenticeship concluded on 25th February 2014 and she is now a senior jockey and unable to claim an allowance. (Race 7).

FROM TOOWOOMBA (FEB 28):

FAYEZ (V. Venkaya), which became very fractious in the barriers, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field. FAYEZ then stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground. Stewards issued a warning on FAYEZ's barrier manners. (Race 1).

After being caught wide in the early stages S. Drake (CLANGORANDA) allowed her mount to stride forward and obtain the leading position near the 1300m. CLANGORANDA (S. Drake) commenced to shift wider on the track from approaching the 400m and at a point approaching the 300m shifted out abruptly and lost ground.

After giving the matter consideration, Stewards ordered that CLANGORANDA be required to officially barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start. A post-race veterinary examination of CLANGORANDA revealed no abnormalities. (Race 2).

Correct weight was delayed to enable J. Morris, the rider of DEFINITELY BAY, which dead-heated for 1st, to view the photo finish print. (Race 4).

Stewards questioned trainer's representative R. Smith in relation to the seemingly improved performance of DEFINITELY BAY (J. Morris). Mr Smith advised that two starts ago the gelding was not suited when racing in a forward position in a 1666m event at Ipswich.

Mr Smith further advised that at its most recent start on 22 February over 1625m the gelding over-raced during the early and middle stages of the event which he felt was to its detriment. He further added that for this reason the horse was dropped back in distance today where it was able to travel more comfortably and he expected an improved showing. (Race 4).

Rounding the home turn, after being taken out marginally by DON'T WALK AWAY (N. Tomizawa), PREACHER BOY (A. Fancourt) clipped the heels of CROSS THE STAR (R. Ride) and blundered when awkwardly placed at the heels of that runner. (Race 8).

Stewards questioned M. Hellyer in relation to the tactics adopted on GREY ASSASSIN today, which settled further back in the field than at its most recent starts. Jockey Hellyer advised that the gelding began somewhat awkwardly and after being caught wide in the early stages and with the view that he was unable to obtain a position forward and close to the rails, he elected to restrain his mount and settled further back in the field that he had anticipated. In the circumstances Stewards accepted the explanation. (Race 8).

Stewards intend to question apprentice B. Stower in relation to her riding of CAVU over the concluding stages of the event. (Race 8).*At a subsequent hearing stewards questioned apprentice B. Stower as to whether she had ridden that colt out to the end of the race. After hearing submissions stewards accepted the explanations tendered by apprentice Stower in relation to her failure to ride that horse out to the end of the event. Following the performance of CAVU, trainer T. Sears advised that the colt would now be sent for a spell

A post-race veterinary examination of MAGNETIC STAR revealed the gelding to have slow post-race recovery, to be short-striding in both forelegs and to have been galloped on on the off-foreleg. Trainer J. Holcombe was advised that he will be required to produce a veterinary clearance for MAGNETIC STAR prior to its next race start. (Race 8).

FROM EAGLE FARM (MAR 1):

Leaving the 600m KNIGHTWICK MANOR (B. El-Issa) hung out making contact with I AM BOSS (T. Bell) on a number of occasions, which in turn shifted out bumping CRAIGLEA MISSION (App A. Allen). (Race 1).

Stewards questioned T. Bell regarding his riding tactics on SENTA DESERT particularly from the 400m. Jockey Bell stated he had been following STORM FABULADOR (J. Taylor) throughout the race and felt that the gelding was under pressure leaving the 800m and he elected to come to its outside approaching the home turn however, was then disappointed for a run between STORM FABULADOR, which shifted out away from the heels of RACING HEART and LEGSMAN, which was tiring.

Jockey Bell added that in his opinion SENTA DESERT lost all momentum at that stage. When asked to explain as to why he did not attempt a run between LEGSMAN and CABALLO RAPIDO near the 200m he stated that throughout the race CABALLO RAPIDO had been shifting ground and as a result he was reluctant to improve into that run and he then elected to shift to the outside to balance the horse and give it an unimpeded run to the finish. Stewards noted his explanation. (Race 2).

Approaching the 200m THE RINGMASTER (T. Bell) was accidentally hit over the head by the whip of R. McMahon. (Race 4).

On return to scale DOUBLE IMPACT was found to have bled from both nostrils during the event. As this was the first occasion DOUBLE IMPACT had suffered a bleeding attack and acting under the provisions of AR53A the gelding would now be banned from racing for a period of 3 months and must gallop over 1000m to the satisfaction of stewards prior to being permitted to race again. (Race 4).

A post race veterinary examination of THE SIXTIES revealed the gelding to have jarred up on today's surface. (Race 4).

Leaving the 1100m JOPA (App A. Allen) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FILLYDELPHIA (D. Browne), which shifted in. D. Browne was advised to exercise more care in future. (Race 7).

C. Munce reported that in his opinion FLYING HOME was not suited to the firm track conditions today. A post race veterinary examination of FLYING HOME (C. Munce) revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer B. Baldwin will be interviewed regarding the gelding's performance today. (Race 7).

When questioned App A. Allen stated he was instructed to have JOPA in a handy position as the gelding was stepping up in distance to 1600m. App Allen added that after beginning well from a wide barrier he elected to ride forward and this resulted in him racing in a more forward position than he anticipated. A post race veterinary examination of JOPA revealed no significant abnormalities. (Race 7).

GUNDY SPIRIT (D. Browne) jumped out at the start making heavy contact with the outside barrier gate resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced and almost being dislodged. (Race 8).

App R. Jamieson reported BALLINGALL BOY raced ungenerously throughout and was reluctant to improve into a run between QUEEN OF THE LOCHS (App T. Harrison) and GUNDY SPIRIT (D. Browne) near 250m and as a result she was unable to fully test the gelding over the concluding stages. Trainer J. Wallace will be interviewed at a later date in regards to today's performance. (Race 8).

R. McMahon reported that HOTEL PARADISO did not feel entirely comfortable in its action in the home straight. Stewards will interview trainer K. Schweida regarding this matter. (Race 8).

FROM GOLD COAST (MAR 1):

Connections advised Stewards that ROCCO IN THE HOUSE (E Kehoe) would be ridden more forward today if possible. ROCCO IN THE HOUSE was slow to begin and slow to muster speed in the early stages of the event resulting in the gelding racing further back than anticipated. (Race 1).

As App. C Schmidt was to be overweight, she was replaced on EXTRA GLANCE by App. A Hearn. As App. M McGuren was to be overweight, Stewards permitted App. C Schmidt to replace him on AMELIA'S SPIRIT. (Race 2).

Jockey T Wolfgram reported that STRATOSPHERE ANGEL was inclined to shift ground in the straight when racing greenly and as a result he was unable to apply the whip over the concluding stages of the race. (Race 3).

Shortly after the start GREY TIGHTS (M Gray) shifted out and bumped INSIDE PAGE (D Griffin) which had shifted in after bumping KERRICAIT (L Williams) on jumping away. This resulted in GREY TIGHTS becoming unbalanced and dislodging Jockey Gray. A post-race veterinary examination of GREY TIGHTS failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities at the time of examination. (Race 4).

When questioned regarding the overall performance of GRAWLIX, Jockey T Treichel stated that GRAWLIX failed to travel comfortably at any stage of the race. He added that GRAWLIX was under pressure leaving the 600m and was reluctant to improve into the race despite his efforts. Jockey Treichel added that even after obtaining unimpeded running to the outside of LUCKY DAY KID approaching the 200m GRAWLIX failed to quicken as expected, however, commenced to find the line over the concluding stages of the race.

Trainer R Lipp stated that the slow tempo in the early and middle stages of the race had had a detrimental effect on the overall performance of GRAWLIX. Stewards noted the explanation. (Race 5).

Leaving the 1000m HOW CAN I HELP and CHASING THE DRAGON made heavy contact resulting in HOW CAN I HELP becoming unbalanced. Jockey D Missen reported that HOW CAN I HELP raced strongly in the middle stages of the event as a result of CHASING THE DRAGON over-racing to his outside. Jockey Missen was of the view that this had a detrimental affect on the gelding's overall performance. (Race 6).

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on BUFFETT which led today in contrast to its normal pattern of racing, App. J K Johnson stated that she rode the gelding out of the barriers in an effort to have it begin with the field. Ms Johnson added that BUFFETT then raced strongly during the early stages of the event. She was of the view that BUFFETT was going to be caught wide so allowed the gelding to stride forward to the lead instead of overly restraining BUFFETT. App. Johnson's explanation was noted. (Race 7).

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on LITTLE LONG HORN, Jockey D Missen stated that he was instructed from the inside barrier to obtain a position just in behind the lead. He added that acting on these instructions he was content to allow ITCHINTOWIN to cross forward to the lead in the early stages, however, he was surprised when BUFFETT then proceeded forward of ITCHINTOWIN (C Whiteley) resulting in him racing further back than anticipated. As a consequence he elected to shift off the fence and improve to the outside of ITCHINTOWIN in the middle stages of the race.

Jockey Missen further stated that approaching the 400m he attempted to shift to the outside of DENWOOD to improve, however, was held up until leaving the 300m where he was able to shift to the inside of BUFFETT to obtain clear running. Stewards accepted his explanation. (Race 7).

DYSFUNCTION (M Hellyer) shifted in under pressure approaching the 100m resulting in Jockey Hellyer having to change his whip through to his right hand. (Race 8).

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on LUCK FROM ABOVE which led today in contrast to its most recent pattern of racing, App. N Masuda stated that due to the perceived lack of pace of today's race, he was instructed to take up a more forward position. After obtaining a position outside EXTRA (T Treichel), App. Masuda was content to allow LUCK FROM ABOVE to stride forward where it was able to lead without him applying any pressure. Stewards will interview Trainer J Wallace regarding his instructions at a later date. (Race 8).

FROM TOOWOOMBA (MAR 1):

Following the disappointing performance of BODEGA BAY, stewards advised trainer L. Fraser that BODEGA BAY would be barred from TAB venues until it established improved form at non TAB meetings. Mr Fraser informed stewards that BODEGA BAY would leave his stables following tonight's performance. (Race 4).

FROM MACKAY (MAR 1):

Jockey C. McIver was questioned regarding his riding of BRAVE PALATINSK in the home straight, in particular near the 400 metres and again near the 200 metres and his vigour over the final 200 metres. Jockey McIver stated that near the 400 metres, after obtaining a position between HIGH CHANCELLOR and HIP SHAKE BANG, a short distance later, HIGH CHANCELLOR shifted out, causing BRAVE PALATINSK to be tightened for room.

Jockey McIver stated further that he was disappointed for a run near the 200 metres and had to be steadied when tightened for room between HIP SHAKE BANG and MUSHATTA, which rolled out. Jockey McIver added that over the final 200 metres he did not ride his mount with his usual vigour after receiving interference previously. Though stewards accepted the explanations, they were critical of his riding over the final 200 metres in that he did not ride in his usual manner when there was an opportunity to do so. Jockey McIver was advised to ensure that he rides his mounts in a manner that does not leave his riding open to question. (Race 6).

Stewards questioned App. K. Aho regarding the tactics adopted on VIKING GOOD THING during the early and middle stages, in particular as to why she raced in an unorthodox position one off the running rail a length forward and did not position herself to take the lead close to the running rail. App. Aho said that her instructions were to lead, however in the early and middle stages she did not believe that she was the necessary two lengths clear of MUSHATTA and consequently remained racing in an unorthodox position.

Stewards advised App. Aho that in future when an opportunity presents to move forward, she must take advantage of the opportunity by advancing her mount forward and take up a position closer to the running rail. (Race 6).

FROM GYMPIE (MAR 1):

Apprentice F Elliot was reprimanded for failing to ride her mount out to the end of the race. Apprentice Elliott was also reprimanded for sending out the incorrect saddlecloth number on OUTBACK CHERYL. (Race 2).

FAST ARROW resented the sand kickback from other runners and as a consequence raced awkwardly during the early and middle stages. (Race 4).

Trainer T Crane was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of COACH STONE. Trainer T Crane was also reprimanded for his conduct in the stewards' room following the race. (Race 4).

FROM SUNSHINE COAST (Mar 2):

Jockey B. El-Issa was reprimanded for his standard of dress when arriving on course.

B. El-Issa was also reprimanded for using his whip unnecessarily when returning to scale and striking QUEEN GEE on entering the enclosure. (Race 2).

LOADED AND READY jumped away awkwardly, causing J. Taylor to make heavy contact with the barrier partition, resulting in jockey Taylor being dislodged. J. Taylor was examined by the doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements. (Race 3).

Connections advised MIGHTY SEQUALO would be ridden further back in the field from the wide draw. MIGHTY SEQUALO over-raced in the early stages and as a result raced wide in a handy position. (Race 4).

Stewards questioned E. Wilkinson regarding the tactics adopted on LIKE THIS, which led in today's event, which is in contrast to its established racing pattern. Having ridden the horse at its most recent start he was of the option that the horse may appreciate racing in a forward position and therefore from the wide alley he rode with vigour in the early stages, however LIKE THIS responded better than he had expected and raced greenly in the lead in the early stages.

Trainer Mr G. Taylor advised stewards that it had not been his intention to lead and, in his opinion, the horse had not raced well when ridden in this fashion previously. Mr Taylor was advised that if it was not his intention to lead with LIKE THIS at the horse's next race start he would be required to notify stewards of any tactical change. (Race 6).

ROUVRAY bled during the event. Connections were advised that ROUVRAY would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months. (Race 7).

FROM TOWNSVILLE (MAR 4):

The start was delayed when SLEEP ON IT (D. Simmons) raised its off hind leg up onto the barrier partition on two occasions, was inspected by the Club's veterinary surgeon on each occasion and cleared to take its place in the field. SLEEP ON IT began very awkwardly and lost considerable ground, then in the early stages was reluctant to stretch out. Trainer J. Campeao was advised that a warning will be placed on the barrier and racing manners of SLEEP ON IT. (Race 1).

Stewards questioned Jockey T. Bannon as to her riding of KNUTE, particularly from the 400 metres to the winning post. Jockey Bannon stated that she was concerned when BLEACHING (D. Hayse), which was racing to her inside, and DEHERE HUNTER, which was racing to her outside, shifted ground and she was placed in an awkward position at their heels and she was reluctant to drive into that run, which did close as she was approaching the winning post.

Whilst stewards noted her explanation, nonetheless they advised Jockey Bannon that when a run presents itself in similar circumstances, they would expect more of an effort by her to improve into such a run. (Race 6).

JOCKEY SUSPENSIONS:

M. Cahill, rider of ROMANARMA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of BANCHORY LASS, causing a tightening to that runner and resulting in that horse losing its rightful running. M. Cahill was suspended from riding in race for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 5 March and to expire at midnight, 14 March. (Doomben – Feb 26 – Race 8).

Jockey D. Evans pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that shortly after straightening, near the 500 metres, he permitted DROPPER CRYSTAL to shift out whilst riding it along, resulting in COUNTING HOUSE being taken from its rightful running, badly crowded and eventually checked. (Rockhampton – Feb 27 – Race 4).

Apprentice A. Fancourt, the rider of ELIAZAR, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 900m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ROXENBURGH (R. Ride), resulting in that runner being forced to check to avoid the heels of ELIAZAR and as a result became unbalanced and lost ground. Apprentice Fancourt's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 1 March, and expire at midnight on Monday, 10 March 2014. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account apprentice Fancourt's good record in relation to careless riding matters. (Toowoomba – Feb 28 - Race 6).

B. El-Issa, the rider of BILLABONG BIRD, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that leaving the 150m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of JAVA BAY (S. Payne), contributing to that runner being forced to relinquish its position and lose its rightful running and further that he continued to permit his mount to shift out, initially contributing to buffeting to CAVU (B. Stower). B. El-Issa's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 8 March, and expire at midnight on Friday, 14 March 2014. M. Hellyer, the rider of GREY ASSASSIN, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that leaving the 150m he permitted his mount to shift in under hard riding when insufficiently clear of CAVU, resulting in that runner being taken in on to JAVA BAY, contributing to that runner being forced to relinquish its position and lose its rightful running, and further that he continued to permit his mount to shift in, contributing to buffeting to CAVU, resulting in that runner becoming unbalanced. M. Hellyer's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight Saturday, 8 March, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 15 March 2014. (Toowoomba – Feb 28 - Race 7).

App. M McKenzie (RED HOT MOTHER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1100m when insufficiently clear of AMELIA'S SPIRIT resulting in that horse having to be steadied to avoid the heels of RED HOT MOTHER. AMELIA'S SPIRIT then shifted in and made contact with DRAGON TALE (J Morris) which shifted in and bumped EXTRA GLANCE (A Hearn) which became unbalanced as a consequence. App. McKenzie was suspended from riding in races for a period of 8 meetings to commence midnight 08/03/2014 and to expire midnight 20/03/2014. (Gold Coast – Mar 1 – Race 3).

Horses walk along the rail every circuit they make. On this occasion Sicimonachicken, who was fractious throughout his time in the ring, somehow managed to lift his left hind leg over the bar which left him straddling the rail. Thankfully the horse remained absolutely calm while a myriad of helpers carefully eased him out of his stressful situation.
