MY CALL - A TATTSBET MASTERSTROKE

By David Fowler | Tuesday, July 30, 2013

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Tattsbet pulled off a masterstroke at Doomben on Saturday.

Deciding to spread "jackpot money" across all first fours at Doomben rather than dumping all the eggs in one basket got a big thumbs up from punters.

With a guaranteed $25,000 starting pool on every first four, almost $1.53 million was wagered on the eight exotics.

Compare this to the corresponding meeting in 2012 when nine races, with no jackpot components, raised just under $125,000.

It's a staggering difference, clearly demonstrating how punters will stump up when the pool size is decent.

Let's see more of it.

All roads head to Deagon on Sunday September 15 for their inaugural picnic race-day.

Eight $6000 races will be run under the BRC banner.

"The response has been phenomenal," BRC chief executive Steve Ferguson told me on the weekend.

"The corporates have jumped on board and public ticketing went on line last Thursday," he added.

The Sandgate community, spearheaded by their State member Kerry Millard, drove the concept early on and a 5000 crowd figure is likely.

This is an opportunity for a family to enjoy racing at the grass roots level. There's no tote but bookies will be there if you want a punt.

My vibe is that it will become a bigger and better annual event.

Quote of the day from Doomben last Saturday goes to winning trainer Doug Johnson.

"I can buy a new car now," Johnson said after Carn's upset win.

"What's wrong with the old one," BRCTV host Bart Sinclair asked.

"Ah.....it's old," Johnson shot back.

It's rare I'll write about a horse to follow but I'm hot to back up on TERONADO next time he runs.

Liked his summer campaign and thought he could win a good two-year-old race first-up. Plenty of fixed odds money agreed with me.

We were shot ducks at the start after he missed it by three lengths yet he hit the line generously. I also noticed his mood on the way to the gates wasn't the best.

I spy a 1300m three-year-old at Eagle Farm on August 10 in the calendar. Follow.

I don't know how many people quizzed me after the last. "How much did you have on Discreet?"

Answer: Zilch

Yes the call was colourful but it illustrates a good point that you can't always tell what a caller has backed by the race-call.

She was home at the 100m, she was the favourite, so I went up a gear or two to keep the punters happy. A bit of theatre never goes astray.

After ignoring Keep It Moist, potting Ferment and being bowled over by roughies Carn and Convent Hill, the $3.10 on offer about Discreet was a little too tight to balance the D.Fowler budget.

Lovely thing about this great business … there's always tomorrow.

Until next week!
