DOOM OCT 27 - PREACHER BOY HITS A WINNING NOTE

By Graham Potter | Saturday, October 27, 2012

Doomben, October 27, 2012.
Track - Good 3; Rail - out 8m.
Benchmark 80 Handicap - 1650m.
1 Preacher Boy; 2 Jack's Back; 3 Santo de Lago; 4 Cap Vilano.
Time: 1-39.06. Last 600: 34.90.
Margins: 0.80; 1.00.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Roger Milne: “He fractured a sesamoid along the way. He had an operation. He was out for a while. He’s filled out his brain and come back the better for it. I’m very pleased to have him back.

“The first-up run we went forward and we were taken on the whole way on a slow track … and that cost us in the last bit.

“Then last start we also went forward and sat out in the open in a fast run race and got to the front too soon. So today we wanted to sit off them and have the last shot instead of them having the last shot at us.”

Jockey Grant Cooksley: “He gets into a position quite easy and then just relaxes … then he just lobs along until you ask him to do something and he does respond when you ask him.

“When he got to the front he thought he had done enough, so he just sort of relaxed again when he got there. I just had to remind him to keep going and he had enough left to do that.

“He won easy.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Preacher Boy): 4.60 out to 5.50. Equal favourite.
Equal favourite (Jack’s Back) 6.00 out to 6.50 in to 5.50. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Connections advised that Sea Marvista would be ridden further back in the field given the step up in distance. The horse was ridden accordingly.

At the start, Santo De Lago (J. Lloyd) shifted out and bumped Side To Side (M. Cahill).

Leaving the 500m, Strumming (E. Wilkinson) shifted out, taking Bang On (R. Myers) wider on the track.

Cap Vilano (L. Cassidy) faltered and changed stride inside the final 100m.

Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice R. Myers regarding the seemingly poor performance of Bang On.

R. Myers stated that the mare travelled well at the rear of the field and made ground strongly coming to the home turn, but did not respond to her riding over the concluding stages and she believed it did not appreciate today's firm track conditions.

A post race veterinary examination of Bang On revealed the horse to be lame in the off-fore fetlock. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided for Bang On prior to its next race start.
