GRAM WILL BE LOOKING TO EXTEND AN ALREADY IMPRESSIVE WINNING SEQUENCE AT EAGLE FARM

The five-year-old chestnut Gram will get plenty of attention when he steps out at Eagle Farm on Saturday in a BM85 Handicap over 1200m where he will be looking to extend his already impressive winning streak to no less than seven wins on the trot.
The relatively lightly raced, Tony Gollan trained, son of Exceed And Excel began his rapid rise up the often slippery form ladder with a 5.76 length Maiden win at the Sunshine Coast as recently as June 7.
His next start … a Class 2 contest over 1015m at the Gold Coast … could have gone either way, but he had another win on the board when the judge ruled a dead-heat, and he has simply not looked back from there.
The third successive win, again in a Class 2 at the Gold Coast over 1000m, was achieved by a sizable 3.17 length margin. The fourth win came via a 1.76 length win in a Class 3 over 1000m at Eagle Farm as Gollan introduced Gram to city racing.
The fifth win came in a BM78 at the same track over the same distance (he had to work for this one, but no judge was needed as he got home by 0.18 lengths) … and Gram took that winning sequence to six in a row when scoring another clearcut success, saluting at Doomben by in another BM78 over 1100m by 2.63 lengths last time out.
Gram has certainly been making up for lost time with these six runs coming in the last three months and the fact that Gollan, who knows his horses so well, is ready to send Gram into action once again is certainly enough to put Gram’s rivals on notice.
“I think the soft draw (barrier three) is the key,” said Gollan, speaking on the stable’s Final Gallop podcast. “She (Bella Youngberry) can get whatever run she wants on him … she can take it up or take a trail.
“He’s in good nick. You can’t fault him. He’s glowing. He looks well … and has obviously been racing very well … and there is nothing in the interim that says he couldn’t run well again.
“When he won at 1100m, the way he ran through the line indicated that the six furlongs would not be a problem. (This will be Gram’s first start over 1200m). He’s conserving his energy mid-race. That’s the key to him. Provided that happens again, which I can’t see why it wouldn’t … with Bella’s claim (3kg) I keep beating the handicapper.
“A low draw, a good jockey and a good weight … very hard to beat.”
As is the case more often than not though, Gollan does not have all of his eggs in one basket with the stable also having Millane, Ten Deep and Esha in the race … and two of those runners, which Gollan acknowledges also have winning chances, are right on the heels of Gram in the betting.
Gram does hold favouritism at $3.20. Esha is $4.80. Ten Deep is $5 while Millane, who was unfortunately withdrawn from the Weetwood at the start a week ago, is out on the $19 mark, largely because he has to carry a big weight from a wide draw.
