MUNCE STABLE CHASING A THIRD TOOWOOMBA CUP WIN

The Chris and Corey Munce training partnership will be looking to claim back-to-back wins in the Toowoomba Cup … and the stable’s third win in the race overall … when the five-year-old mare Diamond Show faces the starter at Toowoomba’s showcase race-day at Clifford Park on Saturday.

The Munce partnership won the race with Walsh Bay last year and Chris Munce also saddled Military Gambler to victory in 2023, so a third Toowoomba Cup win in the last four years is well within reach for the stable.

Diamond Show was previously campaigned by trainer Brad Widdup (where she claimed three wins in fourteen starts … one over 1400m and two wins over 1600m) before switching to the Munce stable, where she has been the model of consistency since stepping out for the first time for Team Munce as recently as June 17.

On that occasion, when resuming after a five month layoff, Diamond Show finished fourth, a touch under two lengths off the winner, over 1350m when jumping from a number twelve barrier draw over a distance well short of her best.

In Diamond Show’s six subsequent starts, the daughter of Almanzor has never finished lower than second place … winning twice and finishing second on four occasions.

The sequence of those runs tells a story.

After that first-up run over 1350m, the Munce training partnership sent Diamond Show on a progressive path distance-wise, with Diamond Show going from 1400m (where she finished second) … to 1600m and then 1800m (where she again finished second on both occasions) … and then to 2060m where Diamond Show found something of a sweet spot, to claim a clearcut victory in a race where the money went down for the first time (Diamond Show started favourite there at $2.70 and won by 1.44 lengths).

Diamond Show then franked her strength over that kind of distance by completing back-to-back wins in her next start, this time over 2200m, a double success which underlines her claims in the 2000m Toowoomba Cup.

Diamond Show had her final lead-in race for the Toowoomba Cup over 2020m at Doomben in a BM85 Handicap two weeks ago where she finished second, just 0.23 lengths behind the winner Livalittle, which should see her well primed for the big day on Saturday.

Apprentice Courtney Bellamy, who has ridden Diamond Show in all of the seven starts the mare has had for the Munce stable, gives way on Saturday with Cejay Graham being handed the reins on Diamond Show for Saturday’s run.
