IMMORTAL BLISS THUMPS HIS RIVALS IN THE BELMONT NEWMARKET. WINS IN DECISIVE FASHION

The Daniel Morton trained Immortal Bliss make a big statement when he comfortably took care of some more than useful opposition when landing the Belmont Newmarket over 1200m at Ascot by a decisive 2.73 length margin.

The five-year-old had won the Listed Beaufine over 1000m two runs back at a starting price of $7.50 but then came up short when sent out as $3.40 second favourite in the Listed HG Bolton Sprint over 1200m, finishing unplaced in fifth, but notably only less than a length behind the winner, Fluro Neuro.

After cornering wide, Immortal Bliss looked to be coming home like the winner with 150m left to the line in that race but he was run out of it late in a blanket finish that saw 0.92 lengths cover the first five runners across the line.

This time, under a great ride from Lucy Fiore, Immortal Bliss’ set the record straight in no uncertain terms, reversing the result with all four of the runners who had beaten him home in the HG Bolton.

Racing over the same track and distance as the HG Bolton, Immortal Bliss ($3.10) was again the second favourite, this time behind the Willie Pike trained Madhi Girl … who would not feature in the running.

Fiore placed Immortal Bliss in a comfortable midfield position in the first half of the race, racing some four lengths off the lead, The Morton trained runner was one off the fence at that stage and Fiore held her nerve as the field turned for home with Immortan Bliss chomping at the heels of a line of runners travelling ahead him.

When the gap Fiore had been waiting for presented itself between Final Siren ($71), who had been punched into the lead, and a tiring, long time front-runner Puli ($151) with 250m left to run, Fiore didn’t have to ask Immortal Bliss twice to take the opportunity, and the son of I Am Immortal duly powered through the opening, hit the front and, basically, had already put the race to bed with as much as 180m left to run.

Snowdome ($7.50) ran home gamely enough to claim second spot while Final Siren’s effort was rewarded with a third place finish.

“We probably had that (a heavy 8 track) in our favour,” said trainer Dan Morton. “He’s got good wet track form so that wasn’t an issue.

“To be honest, I was saying to Lucy (Fiore) before the race just get as wide as you can because it’s getting pretty worn up, but she’s ridden a few more winners than I have and she got it right.”
