ORMAN STRIKES! OK, IT MIGHT ONLY HAVE ONLY BEEN A FOOT RACE, BUT A TROPHY IS A TROPHY IS A TROPHY

By Graham Potter | Monday, September 1, 2025

With local hero and champion racehorse Ka Ying Rising thrilling the crowd with a rapturous Turf Barrier Trial win at the Owners Carnival Day at Sha Tin on Saturday … away from the serious business, it was Jimmy Orman and Derek Leung who paired off to win The Jockey’s Sprint, a 100m relay contest which is always a thoroughly enjoyable highlight in the pre-season, promotional buildup.

Orman can now claim to have landed his first trophy in Hong Kong … ok, it was in a foot-race, but a trophy is a trophy is a trophy, and there was a medal to go with it.

Brenton Avdulla and Ellis Wong finished second, while Jerry Chau and Hugh Bowman came home in third spot.

The first, second and third place-getters received cheques to the value of HK$5 000, HK $3 000 and $2 000 respectively.

Top Hong Kong Jockey Club executives, the CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges and the Executive Director of Racing, Andrew Harding, joined in the festivities … Engelbrecht-Bresges stepping in as the judge for The Jockey’s Sprint while Harding took on the role as starter.

The Owners Carnival Day is a precursor to the start of the official Hong Kong Racing Season which kicks off at Sha Tin on Sunday, September 7.
