YOYO YEEZY RUBBER-STAMPS HIS POTENTIAL AND PUTS HIMSELF ON THE RADAR AS A HORSE TO FOLLOW

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, July 23, 2025

Looking for a horse to follow?

The Matthew Hoysted trained Yoyo Yeezy could be one for the notebook.

A son of the 2019 Everest winner Yes Yes Yes, Yoyo Yeezy is out of Pickabee, who is the dam of Hoysted’s Group 1 winning Uncommon James so the stars have certainly aligned in terms of pedigree … but performance trumps pedigree in any racehorses career so it was important for the lightly raced three-year-old to show real potential … and he did just that at Eagle Farm on Wednesday when shedding his Maiden ticket in emphatic fashion in only his second race start.

The gelding won two trials earlier this year before stepping on out debut on June 18 where he returned an unplaced finish, being soundly beaten out of the placings.

The turnaround from that result to this win a little over a month later was dramatic but easily explained according to Hoysted.

“Obviously he is a horse with tremendous talent,” offered Hoysted. “He’s always shown that.”

“It has been a bit frustrating because he lost the plot on race-day in his first start. He really didn’t handle the race-day experience well. He got agitated pre-race and he put on a bit of a turn behind the gates. He just melted. He was close to being scratched. I thought they would have been running out of patience with him.

“In the end, he was really agitated in the gates and obviously blew the start … and it was a bit of a horror watch from then on in.

“So, it was back to a trial with a barrier blanket on … a bit of re-education out at Kenmore Lodge who did a great job with him, and it was good to see him walk in and load well at the barriers this time.

“That was the difference. He was able to break cleanly, and it was a pretty easy watch after that.

“He is far from the finished product,” continued Hoysted. “The ability is well and truly there but mentally he has still got to put it all together.

“Hopefully, with another spell under his belt he can do so, because that is the only thing that could hold him back from being a pretty serious racehorse … it’s about whether he is going to grow up enough.”

In the race itself, Yoyo Yeezy was quickly into stride, had obtained the lead after the field had travelled 150m, and from there it was all plain sailing as Damien Thornton kept his mount at a comfortable gallop in front … before touching the accelerator on straightening at which stage the race became a no-contest with Yoyo Yeezy bounding clear to win as he liked by just over a three length margin … seemingly with plenty still in hand … with the balance of the field well and truly strung out behind that.

Without being pushed too hard to the line, Yoyo Yeezy stopped the clock for the 1000m trip in 56.82 seconds … just fractionally outside the Class Record time of 56.79 seconds.
