By Darren Winningham | Thursday, May 1, 2025
EAGLE FARM this week – the start of the Stradbroke Season - nine races with the track rated ‘Good’ and the rail out 7 metres.
I am back from Honkers and will be heading to the track. Thanks to everyone who has messaged me and thanked me for the HRO coverage of FWD Champion’s Day 2025. The feedback is much appreciated.

Race 6 LADBROKES DALRELLO STAKES – Listed Race
A Listed class race over 1000 metres for two-year-olds. First leg of the Quaddie.
Matthew Dunn trains Torque To Be Sure (2) with Andrew Mallyon aboard. He ran some solid seconds in his first campaign. Has had a solid recent barrier trial too – which he won – looks well placed.
Toby Edmonds and Stephen McLean train Darn Hot Lady (7) who was unlucky on debut on her home track in the lead up to the Magic Millions finishing a narrow second on a heavy track. Since then, she won a barrier trial and resumed at the Sunshine Coast on the poly track and won. She has drawn well and commands respect. Kyle Wilson-Taylor will ride.
Keep your eye on the two Liam Birchley runners. Amosu (6) won on debut at the Gold Coast. She was very impressive. She resumes here – Craig Williams will ride.
The stable mate is Scriptus Vivace (14) around $51 with Cejay Graham riding. A wonderful roughie for mine and way over the odds. She debuted at the Sunshine Coast in January and won. Ran some nice sectionals. Has drawn well in barrier 6 – could be a massive blow out in the Quaddies and exotics – I will be having her in mine!
Selections:
2 – Torque To Be Sure 7 –Darn Hot Lady 6 – Amosu 14 – Scriptus Vivace Rough chances – (9) Get Ready Lass
Race 7 QUEENSLAND GUINEAS
First leg of the Treble.
A Group 2 race over 1600 metres for the three-year-olds.
I have gone for the lightly raced Nathan Doyle filly Churchills Choice (16) who was undefeated up until her last start where she had no luck in the straight. She was first up over 1400 metres at Randwick in that effort. She has won previously over the mile and I think that she will be better second up. Koby Jennings has been booked a ride - do not underestimate this jockey he is a very strong rider with a great amount of ability and will suit her style of racing. I am glad to see him get opportunities like this.
Interjection (9) is trained by the O’Shea and Charlton yard – Craig Williams to ride. He has been getting back in his last two starts and powering home late. There is genuine speed in this race and given a fast tempo the race should pan out well for this runner to flash home late and be there when the whips are cracking.
Depth of Character (4) Is the last start winner at the track and distance. He goes up in grade – but winning form is good form – trained by Annabel Neasham and will have the “King” Noel Callow riding.
Boomtown Boss (3) has been winning as well – two from two this preparation. Trained by Tony Gollan – Emily Lang has ridden him five times for four wins and a second – it is awesome to see her keep the ride in this Group race – will probably give her her biggest career win if he salutes. He looks like he will get the mile – he will be right in this race.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott runner Shangri La Spring (1) will lead with Tim Clark riding. Comes back from 2000 metres to the mile. I think he will be better placed later in the Carnival.
Keep your options with the Laming runner – Benefactor (10) – has been racing in Group 1 races in Sydney. Comes back home – loves the mile – will be ridden by Martin Harley – did win here first up over 1400 metres. Is around $51 – serious good each way odds.
Selections:
16 – Churchill’s Choice 9 –Interjection 4 – Depth of Character 3 – Boomtown Boss Rough chances – (1) Shangri La Spring & (10) Benefactor
Race 8 THE VICTORY STAKES
A Group 2 race over 1200 metres.
There is some serious speed in this race – and each year it seems to favour strong finishers. I like a local runner who is a run on horse trained by Kelly Schweida – El Morzilla (17). Damian Thornton will ride her. She is a runner that needs a lot of things to go right – but she will love this track and should get every opportunity to find her way home.
Coleman (14) is trained by Waller Racing and will be ridden by Bailey Wheeler. This would give Wheeler his biggest career win as well – we could see records broken if two apprentices can win the feature races on the program. This three-year-old colt is above average. Has two wins from three starts first up as well. He has had two recent trials and could be primed for a first up killing.
Coal Crusher (3) came off a solid second in a Group 3 race at Randwick last time out. Trained by Joe Pride who always seems to bring some good ones to the Carnival. Andrew Mallyon takes the ride.
Jedibeel (4) is trained by Brad Widdup and Robbie Dolan is riding. Comes off a superb effort in the Group 1 TJ SMITH at Randwick at his last start. He has won at Group 2 level – I just always have some reservations with him over this distance but, with the speed in the race, he should be a few pairs back ready to unleash late.
Far Too Easy (5), trained by David McColm, won the 2024 Kosciusko – Craig Williams rode him then and will be on again here. His two recent barrier trials have been solid – winning both. He has a superb first up record. Just not sure where they ride him here – probably midfield and close to striking around the 200 metres – he will be coming fast late.
Selections:
17 – El Morzillo 4 – Jedibeel 14 – Coleman 5 – Far Too Easy Rough chances – (3) Coal Crusher & (7) Hidden Wealth
Race 9
The last race of the program – a three-year-old open class race over 1300 metres.
I like the newcomer to the Gollan Racing stables Socrazyinlove (13) down in the weights with Angela Jones. She has drawn well in barrier 3 and down in the weights. She will strip fitter for her first up effort for the stable.
Sammy Conquers All (5) is a Lawrie Mayfield-Smith trained runner with Robbie Dolan aboard. These two have had some good success in recent weeks – can it continue here? He flashed home here late over the 1200 metres. On that run he will relish the extra 100 metres and should be in the finish
The top weight Emirate (1) is trained by Chris Waller – Tim Clark to ride. He is the early favourite for the race. I just think he is better on wet ground. That is why I have tipped around him and looked for some value. In saying that he resumes after racing in Group 1 and 2 races last time in – he is probably going to race handily and be hard to hold out.
Snack Bar (2) is trained by James Cummings with Craig Williams aboard. Resumed at a midweek meeting at Warwick Farm when heavily backed and was disappointing running third. He has won second up and must be respected – keep safe.
Moscow Circus (10) is not without a rough chance.
Selections:
13 – Socrazyinlove 5 – Sammy Conquers All 1 – Emirate 2 – Snack Bar Rough chances – (10) Moscow Circus ______________________________________________________________________

Looks like an open contest between Ryan Maloney, Craig Williams, Angela Jones and Kyle Wilson Taylor. Kyle Wilson Taylor could be some good odds - maybe something on him from Craig Williams.
