BOOMTOWN BOSS IS WELL PRIMED FOR THE GROUP 2 QUEENSLAND GUINEAS

By Graham Potter | Thursday, May 1, 2025

Multiple Brisbane Premiership winning trainer Tony Gollan is preparing to try and repel the Southern raiders as the Stradbroke Season officially gets under way at Eagle Farm on Saturday

“I certainly like taking on the southerners at home, more so than I do travelling away … but it is still a challenge for us,” said Gollan.

“Obviously we are pretty strong here week in and week out, but we are looking forward to the southerners getting up here. They add a little spice to the racing and it’s not something we want to shy away from. We encourage the competition, and I think it is going to be a fantastic carnival.”

Boomtown Boss is one of the runners that Gollan will send out on Saturday. The gelding will contest the day's main feature race, the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.

A winner of four of his nine career starts … and having won his last starts in succession, including a last start win in the Listed Daybreak Lover … Boomtown Boss’s bid for a hat trick of wins will come with a step up in distance to the 1600m trip.

That has come with a finely measured buildup to the Guineas with Boomtown Boss’s last two wins coming over 1200m and 1400m, significantly both at Eagle Farm, which is seemingly as good a buildup preparation as you can have for Saturday’s Group 2 assignment.

“He is one of the major chances on Saturday,” said Gollan. “We beat a nice horse (Goodlucktome) in the Daybreak Lover which traditionally is a good lead-up to the Guineas.

“He is a very quirky horses though … and the horse/rider combination for him, as it is for a lot of horses, is important. Emily (Lang) will be on him on Saturday. She knows the horse so well that we go to the race pretty confident.”

Lang has ridden Boomtown Boss in all four of the son of Spirit Of Boom’s victories. In fact, she has only been beaten once in five rides on him and that was a second place result when coming home less than half-a-length behind the winner Give Me Space, who went on to win the Group 3 Vo Rogue Stakes.

Boomtown Boss is currently a $7 chance for the Guineas in an open betting race.
