MARK NEWNHAM: "MY WISH DESERVES HIS CHANCE"
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, April 24, 2025
HRO’s Darren Winningham caught up with trainer Mark Newnham at Sha Tin. It was an interesting conversation
WINNO: ”Hi Mark. You have got My Wish contesting the FWD Champions Mile. Also in there is the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Royal Patronage. What’s it like taking on your old boss (Waterhouse) on your home territory now?”
MN: ”Yeah, a little bit different coming here. Look, it used to happen regularly, obviously, in Sydney where we both had good results against each other but, at the end of the day you're in a horse race against, you know, thirteen or fourteen other horses … so, you have got to beat everybody and, whether that is Gai or anybody else, I like to win.”
WINNO: ”My Wish on Sunday? He finished second in the Derby over 2000m … is the mile more his go, do you think?”
MN: ”Oh for sure. His win in the Classic Mile was dominant. The form out of the race has been good. You know, he's versatile in the way we can ride him. He is taking on the big guns, but he deserves his chance.
WINNO: “I suppose like when we get to December, or maybe this meeting next year, we will probably see the best of him, do you think?”
MN: “I think so. He's still maturing. He's still physically quite an immature horse, so, I think, yeah, in twelve months time we will see the best of him.
WINNO: “Good luck on Sunday.”
MN: “Thank you”
